MADRIGAL I AM SAM MOVIE REFLECTION BS-SW12

Sam Dawson, working at starbucks as a dine-in crew who amazingly know the definition
of every coffee variant available for specific everyday customers who routinely went by
their starbucks branch. He also is able to organize all the condements from containers
to sachets and mugs pretty much accordingly. This happens to people with obsessive
compulsive disorder as part of being autistic, wherein people have recurring, unwanted
thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something
repetitively (compulsions). The repetitive behaviors, such as hand washing, checking on
things or cleaning, can significantly interfere with a person’s daily activities and social
interactions. Many people have focused thoughts or repeated behaviors. But these do
not disrupt daily life and may add structure or make tasks easier. For people with OCD,
thoughts are persistent and unwanted routines and behaviors are rigid and not doing
them causes great distress. Many people with OCD know or suspect their obsessions
are not true; others may think they could be true (known as poor insight). Even if they
know their obsessions are not true, people with OCD have a hard time keeping their
focus off the obsessions or stopping the compulsive actions. This is how the movie
introduces Sam Dawson.

Now as part of being a male human being, Sam needs to hurry from work going to the
hospital as a lady needs to delivery his baby. By a lady he met once and had a one
night stand. Again, this is to proove that Sam is capable of expressing a male human
emotion, resulting to making a girl pregnant. Which I would say, he is very aware of and
seems to be taking actions about what he did. That is why he is very excited as his
starbucks boss reminded him that it is time, it is time for him to go to the hospital for the
delivery of his baby. So he rushed towards the hospital repeatedly saying that it is time,
and making sure to do a countdown on all the floors of the hospital elevator, that is how
excited he is.

By the time he came to his partners room, he needed instructions from the nurse on
how to comfort his partner, not realizing that he look a bit funny as he is able to parrot
his partner's reactions to all the pain of delivering their baby, repeatedly saying this is it,
this is it, this is it! Finally, it is a girl. That innocent look towards his baby girl, as he
answer the nurse about the name of the baby. Lucy Diamond Dawson, as he say you're
my daughter, I am your father makes it more amazingly wonderful. Not realizing that
later then, the mother of the child choose not to be a mother that moment, leaving the
baby to him, to Sam Dawson, by himself, by his innocent 7-year old mental capacity.

So he left the hospital carrying his Lucy Diamond Dawson baby, along with some milk
bottles and diapers. He was able to to bring it home, give milk, change diapers in the
weirdest version by putting beatles pin on it. He is able to bring it to the grocery store
with him but of course making a bit of a mess as he can only carry so much. The baby
abviously is not that comfortable with what was happening, causing a neighbor to be
awaken by Lucy's cry.

Now the neighbor, Annie, an agoraphobic pianist decided to help him, she gave Sam a
ring. She’s a caring smart woman sending a message to Sam, explaining things to him
which made Sam realized that Annie will always be home to keep an eye on baby Lucy
Diamond Dawson. That is why as time goes by, Sam’s unconditional love for his
daughter and support from Annie allowed him to be an exceptionally good father.
Everything went well until Lucy reaches 7 years of age, which is the level of Sam’s
mental capacity, and she starts overlapping his father's limited intellect and
unfortunately she begins to avoid learning as she realize that she do not want to look
more normal than his father.

Lucy grew up with his father's friends who has different types of mental disorders as
well.

On the process of Lucy growing up, Sam leaves her to Annie, that is why Annie is the
very first word that Lucy have spoken.

Lucy grew up as a very very smart girl, with lots of questions and the answers from her
father always amazes her as Sam explains very innocently, and as a beatle obsessed
person, everytime he answer her questions he connects it to all of beatles biography,
also repeating most of his words, which made lucy realize how special his father is.
Lucy know how limited his father's mind is, making her very hesitant to be more smarter.
As she do not like to surpass his father's mental capability.

They are the most attached daughter-father. However, most of the patience and
understanding is evidently coming from Lucy as time goes by.

Lucy then is became more aware of his father's mental limitation and capabilities.

It is then starting to affect Lucy's social interaction with her friends in school, as her
classmates started to made her realize how different her father is.

She became a daughter-mother, protecting her father to realize it.

Until one time, Sam bumped into a prostitute, unaware that he is being approached, he
was then arrested for soliciting without him realizing it. Charges are swiftly dropped, but
not before the school officers realizes and takes note of Sam’s mental limitations and
immediately decides Sam is an unfit father. Sam and his friends realized how important
it is that he needs the best legal person available to ensure his custody of Lucy, and as
part of being weird people, they then pick out the law firm with the longest name in the
Yellow Pages. And they end up to one of the hard-driving, hot-tempered, self-absorbed
social worker taking up pre-law Rita.

In this case social worker is responsible for this case because, Social work is making a
contribution to the field of mental retardation but social workers are not giving the
substantial services which are needed and which they have the competence to give.
Along with other professions and the general public, social work failed for many years to
give focused attention to the mentally retarded as a group in the population which
needed their services. Lacking knowledge of ways to help the severely and moderately
retarded, the social workers helped parents place their children if that seemed the best
solution at that time. Other social services were given, but often they were fragmentary
and somewhat isolated. What amounted to neglect rose more from frustration and lack
of knowledge than from indifference.

Rita Harrison show Sam Dawson how she agrees to present him as a probono because
rita has felt that Sam Dawson doesn’t have a team to hold on except to his friends so
that’s why Rita Harrison help her. Rita’s Harrison field is of social work is  field that tell
me that the need for social services is great and that social workers are pitifully few in
number in the special programs; that social workers are still generally indifferent to the
great need and possibilities in the field; that recruiting to the field is very difficult; and
that the interest and help of the profession is essential in order to make the contribution
of social work to the mental retardation field what it should be and could be. Pressing
upon social work are many underdeveloped fields-corrections, aging, addictions, to
name but three; only yesterday were there even greater pressures from the mental
health and chronic disease fields. Too many fields have to capture social workers on a
catch-as-catch can basis, a situation which does not make for sound development of
social services. For some of these fields, mental health particularly, development is
substantial as a result of broad scale planning and the support by the public of a full
program and inclusive staffing.

Rita Harrison is really willing to help Sam Dawson for his case specially when the time
comes that Rita Harrison felt how lovely father Sam Dawson is to lucy , how Sam
Dawson Love lucy and how Sam Dawson is willing to take care of lucy. As well as lucy
too lucy said that “ I Don’t want any father only you” to Sam Dawson.

Time has come that Sam Dawson is on the point that he will give up and has no chance
that he see to get lucy back, Rita came to the house of Sam Dawson to encourage him
to continue the case and fight together to that case but, Sam is trying to refuse that
saying that “ All people like you doesn’t understand doesn’t know what I feel doesn’t
have feeling”. To Rita Harrison without knowing what Rita Harrison problem is. Rita has
a Husband that screwing up with other girls and has a son that not playing with her and
that’s why Rita wants to continue the case so in some reason Rita will be happy and
Rita will have a achievement that will she show to her son. Rita Harrison seems to have
it all. Her stylish good looks, her flashy car, and her tangible ambition make her seem
intimidating to her colleagues and family. But the sad truth is that her husband is
cheating on her, her son resents her, and her clients are high-maintenance and spoiled.
Rita begins to learn something basic about the human heart when she meets Sam, a
mentally challenged adult whose case she takes on pro-bono.

Rita at that time needs a ladder to climb back on top hiding some flaws on her career,
so she accepted Sam’s case pro bono or free of charge to save face with her
colleagues. Sam and Rita did not have a good start but then as their battle went by, Rita
became attached to the case and all this is a fight to Sam’s big battle to hold onto Lucy.

While Sam emerges with a greater sense of self-worth and self-reliance, it is Rita, who
evolves. In Sam’s loving relationship with Lucy, Rita is forced to see how badly she has
failed as a mom to her own young son. Making it all more wanting for them to win the
case. There are, however, a lot of people that Sam has to prove that he will be as good
a parent in the future as he has been up to now.

Opposing Rita in court is Lawyer Turner, easily as smart as she is, who firmly believes
Sam is not the best parent for Lucy. And Randy Lucy’s court-appointed foster mother is
very eager to adopt the child and they are confident of their ability to be a better parents
than Sam.

At the end of the movie, Randy (the foster mother) realizes that Sam does truly love
Lucy and is a fitting parent so she surrenders Lucy to him and says she will offer her
support to him at the court hearing.

Until one day came that Sam really want is to be with his daughter Lucy. And everyone
can see how happy Sam Dawson is and how lovely parent is Sam Dawson is.

Game day of Lucy of his sports soccer everyone is there supporting lucy’s game day
Rita and his son willy was there , Sam Dawson Friend’s was there Randy Foster was
also there supporting his daughter.

Sam is not alone Sam has many friends and loveones to hold on everyone is always got
sam’s back. Everyone is supporting Sam Dawson. Lucy is back to school and Sam
Dawson has a new work earning some income that fit to support lucy’s financial needs.

On this case Atty. Rita Harrison Williams is the main reason why Sam Dawson And
Lucy is together again.

Short facts about Atty. Rita Harrison Williams is a fast-talking, high-flying and far too
busy. Rita is the kind of Hollywood lawyer who lives for work and nothing else– not that
she’s proud of this arrangement. Her ambition has driven her away from her family, a
fact that she has trouble admitting to herself. Although she talks tough, she may be
more tender than she realizes.

Lawyers Who Are Also Social Workers: How to Effectively Combine Two Different to
Better Serve Clients. There are many benefits to earning degrees in both law and social
work. Skills learned in a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program that are helpful in the
practice of law include interviewing, empathic listening, identification of clients’ goals,
evaluation, crisis intervention, and referral. In addition, social workers’ clients must often
overcome a number of barriers, legal and otherwise. For that reason, it is critical that
social workers4 have some familiarity with the law in order to understand and explain
their clients’ legal rights. Since the two fields complement each other so well, both
lawyers and social workers are increasingly called upon to consult with each other and
work in multidisciplinary teams to provide better service to their clients.5 From the
clients’ perspective, someone qualified as both

Attorney and a social worker, with the respective skills from both professions, provides a
valuable resource to address their overlapping social and legal needs. Thus, for many, it
makes perfect sense to embody the skills of both professions by pursuing both degrees.

In its unfolding, “I Am Sam” suggests how everyone is damaged in one way or another
and how it makes us all to look inward before judging the abilities and limitations of
others. These sentiments was shown dramatically in this movie for “I Am Sam". The
characters have been amplified so much, with every insight and nuance, as they all
show to possesses the same qualities making them all hitting the same goal of wanting
Sam to have custody over Lucy.
