 Calamba Agrarian Issue is about the dispossession of the tenants of their lands. It was
between the hacienda management and the group of tenants. The conflict arises due
to the unreasonable increase in rent and land confiscation. Also, due to the
exploitative practices of the hacienda management.
 Rizal was involved because he investigated if the property taxes were paid by the
Dominicans. But he found out that
o the Dominican friars owned most of the estates in Calamba
o the profits earned by the Dominicans increased as the rentals paid by the tenants’
increases.
o The hacienda management never contributed any amount of money in terms of
town fiesta, education of the children and improvement of the agriculture
o Tenants were deprived of their lands

 Lands belong to the community where the inhabitants of the barangay or village

used lands not only for agricultural purposes but also for business. They made the
farmers choose whether they will leave the land or agree to become tenants.
9. In what way did the Catholic Church become a landowner?  What is your stand about the
friars owning vast track of lands?
 The reason why they were owning such haciendas was because the income from
those lands would finance their institutions and missions inside and outside of the
country. For me, it is fine for them to own lands but not to the pint that they will
remove the rights of the farmers to their own lands. Because the lands which was
made as farms were the source of income of the farmers and tenants.
