Tutorial No. ( 5 )
Answer concisely.

1. What do you think operations such as blow molding and film-bag making are performed
vertically?

2. Explain the characteristic for the forming and shaping processes for plastics and composite materials below:
 Extrusion
 Injection Molding
 Blow Molding
 Rotational Molding

3. Explain why injection molding is capable of producing parts with complex shapes.

4. Suggest the design considerations involved in replacing a metal beverage can with one made completely of
plastic.

5. Briefly discuss five of the general design guidelines for the production of plastic and composite-material
parts.

6. Provide TWO methods to reduce product shrinkage in plastic injection molding.

7. List the processes and operations involved in producing powder metallurgy parts. Then, provide typical
products made by powder metallurgy process.

8. Why is there density variation in the compacting of powders? How is it reduced?

9. One of the methods of metal powders compaction is isostatic pressing.

(i) List the advantages and disadvantages of hot isostatic pressing in metal powders compaction.
(ii) Compare the relative advantages and limitations of cold and hot isostatic pressing.

10. Mechanical and physical properties are closely related on their density. Explain.

11. Describe sintering in powder metallurgy.

12. The powder metallurgy process is being widely used in the manufacturing industries nowadays. Why do
you think that this process is becoming more competitive with processes such as casting and forging?

13. Briefly describe (i) coining and sizing, (ii) impregnation and (iii) infiltration in secondary and finishing
operations of powder metallurgy.
