History of Architecture 2
2. Define Historic style in Architecture.
Historic style in architecture is any identifying mark or design that made it
notable during its construction in a given period. Different styles emerged across
different societal group, which can be traced as far as the stone age period.
Architectural styles are ‘flexible’ in terms of its adaptability with the architect’s ideas
and the structure’s environment. However, a style can be considered ‘historic’ if it is
influential – in a way that many other architects relate a particular style to the
architectural development.
Notable Historic Architectural Styles (Craven, J. 2019):
 11,600 B.C. to 3,500 B.C. — Prehistoric Times
Early humans have no form of recording history back then, but
there are existing constructed earthen mounds, stone circles,
megaliths.
 1100 to 1450 — Gothic
Originally, Gothic Architecture was known as the French Style. It
evolved by innovating pointed arches, flying buttresses, elaborate
stained glass, and gargoyles and other sculptures.
 1400 to 1600 — Renaissance
This period is known as the ‘age of awakening’. Originated in
Italy, France, and England, Renaissance architects were inspired by
proportionating elements from the buildings of Ancient Greece and
Rome.
 1600 to 1830 — Baroque
It is categorized by complex shapes, extravagant ornaments,
opulent paintings, and bold contrasts. It is reflected in the churches in
Italy, where irregular shapes and extravagant ornamentation are
present.

3. Newgrange, Ireland
Newgrange is a prehistoric
monument in Boyne Valley, in County
Meath, Ireland. Archaeologists
considered Newgrange as an ancient
temple – it is a place of astrological,
spiritual, religious and ceremonial
importance, much like modern day
cathedrals. It is considered as a
prehistoric structure, because, it was
built during the stone age (Neolithic)
period about 5,200 years ago (3,200
B.C.), predating famous prehistoric
monuments and structures like the
Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of
Giza.
