The Southern Global City of the Philippines

Global cities are known for their outstanding influence when it comes to the

contribution in the systemized economic, political and cultural aspects in globalization.

As one takes a view for the culturally diverse nation-state that is the Philippines, I have

chosen the global city of Cebu. Cebu is known for being one of the main four provinces

that surrounds Central Visayas, although some experts may see Cebu city as yet

unqualified for becoming that of a global city, I would like to point out that UNESCO, a

specialized agency for promoting nation-wide sustainable development, has officially

categorized Cebu city as their “newest global design city” and I am more than willing to

argue that, that it itself classifies as a global city for the following scenarios.

Cebu is widely known for its pillar of cultural significance, and there are many

ways for multinational corporations and companies to play a substantial role that circles

around the fact that there is an impact of culture on profit. Hence, if global cities are

culturally diverse, then the global city of Cebu is without a doubt one.

Cebu is also home to the famed Abellana Sports Complex and its thriving

industry for tourism. One of a global city’s main source of attraction comes from the

interaction and the integration of people, various organizations, or even government

related agenda. A global city should serve as a platform for the promotion of its

industries and a source for economic growth. Hence, if global cities are evident for
economic, social, and political affairs, then the global city of Cebu is without a doubt

one.

In conclusion, what makes a global city a global city comes from the

development of its economic, social, cultural and political dimensions. It should go

without saying that Cebu city is an excellent example of a global city, it’s considered the

regional center of Central Visayas for a reason. And I sincerely cannot imagine how

there would be anyone out there who wouldn’t categorize the city of Cebu as a global

city given the domination of trade, together with various economic factors that

influence the industries that pillars this certain region of Central Visayas.
