LOCI in 2 dimensions

The locus of a variable point is the set of points satisfying certain given conditions.

1 The locus of a variable point P which is at a fixed distance 𝑟 from a given point A is a circle
with centre A and radius 𝑟.

2 The locus of a variable point P which is at a fixed distance 𝑟 from a given straight line AB
is a pair of lines parallel to AB and are at a distance 𝑟 from AB.

3 The locus of a variable point P which is equidistant from two given points A and B is the
perpendicular bisector of the line AB.
4 The locus of a variable point P which is equidistant from two given lines AB and AC is the
line bisecting the angle between AB and AC.

1) Draw a rectangle ABCD in which AB = 10 cm and AD = 7 cm. On your diagram and

within the rectangle ABCD,

(i) draw the locus of pints which are 6 cm from C,

(ii) draw the locus of points which are 8 cm from the side AD

(iii) draw the locus of points which are equidistant from A and C.

(iv) mark with letter P the point which is 6 cm from C and 2 cm from BC.

(v) shade, and label S, the region in which a point S lies given that S is nearer to A than to
S and is more than 6 cm from C.

2) (a) Draw  ABC in which AB = 10 cm, BC = 9 cm and AC = 8 cm.

(b) Measure and write down the size of the largest angle in the diagram.

(c) On the same diagram, construct the locus of points inside the , which are (i) 7 cm
from A, (ii) 3 cm from line AB, (iii) equidistant from A and B, (iv) equidistant from
AB and AC.

(d) Shade, and label R, the region in which a point R lies, given that AR  7 cm and AR 
BR

(e) Shade, and label Q, the region in which a point Q lies given that Q is nearer to AC than
to AB, Q is less than 5 cm from AB and AS  7 cm
