INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCE ABOUT MILLENNIALS


The name that given to those who born between 1981 and 1997 is “Millennial”,
also they’re often called Generation Y. Millenials are one of the first generations
to grow up as “digital natives”, with the internet, social networks, search engines
and low-cost broadband all at their disposal.
1.2 THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS TOPIC
Millenials is important in the work place because the Millennials are making the
better world of work through their career ambitions, attitudes about the workplace,
and knowledge of new technologies, and it is important to understand generational
differences in values and expetations.
1.3 THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY

misunderstanding the differences between generations can detrimentally affect
employee performance and satisfaction.

PT. Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN)
PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara) is an Indonesian government-owned corporation
which has a monopoly on electricity distribution in Indonesia and generates the
majority of the country electrical power.

2.1 The Generations


2.1.1 Generation X
a. Gen X Birth Years : 1965 – 1979
b. Current Age : 40 – 54
c. Other Nicknames : “Latchkey” generation, MTV generation
d. Generation Size : 82 Million
e. Media Consumption : Gen X still reads newspaper, magazines, listens to the
radio, watches TV (about 165 hours worth of TV a month). They are also
digitally savvy and spend roughly 7 hours a week on Facebook.
f. Banking Habits : Since they are digitally savvy, Gen X will do some research
and financial management online, but still prefer to do transactions in person.
They believe banking is a person-to-person business and demonstrate brand
loyalty.
g. Shaping Events : End of the cold war, the rise of personal computing, and
feeling lost between the two huge generations.
h. What’s next in Gen X’s financial horizon : This generation is experiencing the
highest growth in student loan debt. While this might seem counterintuitive, it
can be explained by the fact that this generation has the most wealth and is
looking to help their children with their student debt. They have a belief that
you should take care of your children enough to set them on the right course
and don't plan on leaving any inheritance. With more Americans outliving
their retirement fund, declining pensions, and social security in jeopardy,
ensuring you can successfully fund retirement is a major concern for Boomers.

pay off student debt, and take care of aging parents. These demands put a high
strain on their resources. The average Gen Xer carries $142,000 in debt,
though most of this is in their mortgage. They are looking to reduce their debt
while building a stable saving plan for the future.
2.1.3 Generation Y (Millennials)
a. Millennial Birth Years: 1980 to 2000
b. Current Age: 25 to 39
c. Other Nicknames: Gen Y, Gen Me, Gen We, Echo Boomers
d. Generation Size: 95 Million
e. Media Consumption: 95% still watch TV, but Netflix edges out traditional
cable as the preferred provider. Cord-cutting in favor of streaming services is
the popular choice. This generation is extremely comfortable with mobile
devices but 32% will still use a computer for purchases. They typically have
multiple social media accounts.
f. Banking Habits: Millennials have less brand loyalty than previous generations.
They prefer to shop product and features first and have little patience for
inefficient or poor service. Because of this, Millennials place their trust in
brands with superior product history such as Apple and Google. They seek
digital tools to help manage their debt and see their banks as transactional as
opposed to relational.
g. Shaping Events: The Great Recession, the technological explosion of the
internet and social media, and 9/11
h. What's next on their financial horizon: Millennials are entering the
workforce with high amounts of student debt. This is delaying major
purchases like weddings and homes. Because of this financial instability,

preference for on-demand services. They want partners that will help guide
them to their big purchases.
2.1.4 Generation Z
a. Gen Z Birth Years: 1995 to 2019
b. Currently Aged: 4 to 24
c. Other Nicknames: iGeneration, Post-millennials, Homeland Generation
d. Generation Size: Roughly 25% of the population
e. Media Consumption: The average Gen Z received their first mobile phone at
age 10.3 years. Many of them grew up playing with their parents' mobile
phones or tablets. They have grown up in a hyper-connected world and the
smartphone is their preferred method of communication. On average, they
spend 3 hours a day on their mobile device.
f. Banking Habits: This generation has seen the struggle of Millennials and has
adopted a more fiscally conservative approach. They want to avoid debt and
appreciate accounts or services that aid in that endeavor. Debit cards top their
priority list followed by mobile banking. Over 50% have not entered a bank
branch in at least 3 months.
g. Shaping Events: Smartphones, social media, never knowing a country not at
war, and seeing the financial struggles of their parents (Gen X).
h. What's next on Gen Z's financial horizon: Learning about personal finance.
They have a strong appetite for financial education and are opening savings
accounts at younger ages than prior generations.
2.2 Research about Engagement
According to Australian Catholic University Research Engagement is the interaction
between researchers and research end-users outside of academia, for the mutually beneficial
transfer of knowledge, technologies, methods or resources.
2.3 What and Who Millennials are
Millennials is some people who born in 1980 until early 2000 and they called Echo-boomers
or Generation Me. Millennials generally are the childrens of Gen X or Old Gen X.
Millennials is demographic group after Generation X. Generally Millennials aged 17 -37 in
this year. Millenials often considered special because this generation different from the other
generations. Millennials have a characteristics that they born in colored TV, Handphone and
internet already available.
2.4 Engaging Millennials
Because millennials pro in technological skills so put them in position that have a lot work in
technology for example like computer,phone and any form of electronic device.
2.5 Factors that influence millennials
A. Appreciation
Millennials are hard workers. We are willing to stay up late at the office to complete
deadlines given using our time off to meet with people and even cover certain payments for
the benefit of the office. This shows that our generation is not the lazy generation.
What makes us less or not motivated is appreciation.
B. Space to develop
I often hear peers resign from the old office for almost the same reason, which is not
developing. Millennials need workplaces that can fulfill our desire to grow. We are not
generation that is quickly satisfied with what we have or know now. We always have the
desire to learn and know new things. So millennial needs an office that provides opportunities
for growth. For example, online short course programs per month, trainings, workshops
outside the office and things that basically can add new knowledge. When millennials feel a
lot of development in us, knowing a lot of new things, we will tend to stay at work
C. Supportive Managers
Millennial hates typical managers who act as bosses. What is the example? The boss is the
person who only gives orders without giving clear directions and examples. Millennial needs
a manager who can protect, remain firm but on the other hand give an example, provide
criticism and advice in order to move forward. Millennials need people they can look up to.
Work can be overwhelming and hard, but when we have supportive managers, we will stay in
the company.
D. Office Atmosphere
What is meant by the office atmosphere here is the shape and office decoration. This is not
the main factor, but it is one of the factors that influence whether we survive or not. Office
with a unique and cool design has a special attraction for us millennials. Living in an era that
is completely online, social media is our daily consumption. Having an office with a cool
design and unique facilities will be a matter of pride to be exhibited on social media.
Moreover, an office with a unique and good design will also support our millennial creative
thinking process.
E. Setting New Standards of Leadership
There are several important factors that make millennial leaders in the future. First, the baby
boomer generation began to retire, which created many vacancies in the company. Second,
experienced baby boomers want to be in the same position. Third, young leaders under the
age of 30 are increasingly being liked. Millennial leaders will prioritize values, ethics,
flexibility, and feedback. But even though millennials are more shy than the previous
generation, they also have high motivation. At least this generation will define a better
direction of leadership.
F. Start Preparing to Face Generation Z
Millennial become more mature and will be replaced by the next generation. However, their
difference with the Z generation is quite thin. Although the definition of the next generation
varies, most experts describe millennial born in the mid-1990s to the 2000s. Means, people in
this generation began in their 20s and began to enter the workforce. In 2018, the most senior
millennial generation will start noting their differences from the successor generation. Thus,
millennials begin to prepare themselves to adapt to existing differences.
G. Fighting for Diversity and The Rights of The People
Millennials are very concerned about diversity and equality. This is because their generation
is very diverse. This generation is also more enthusiastic about philosophy and political
movements. In addition, millennials feel that diversity has not been handled well by previous
generations. With many millennials leading an organisation, even large companies, there will
be more programs and decisions related to diversity and equalization of rights.
H. Faithful at Work
Most people criticize millennial as a generation who likes to switch companies. They cannot
commit to just one company. This has a point. However, perhaps it is because of their age,
not the characteristics of their generation. Pew research shows that millennials do not switch
jobs as much as Gen X when they are the same age. But in 2018, with a more stable position
and more experience, millennial will stay and show loyalty to the company.
I. Millennial Will Face the Automation Dilemma
One of the biggest technological trends since 2010 is the presence of machines, Artificial
Intelegent (AI), and automation. Technology continues to develop and more jobs will be
replaced by machines in 2018. This will create puzzles for millennials, how do they deal with
them? The survey shows that millennial has hope and also a great fear of this. They are the
generation most affected by this problem. Maybe millennial will experience polarization at
work, or another shift in work trends next year. The more mature and experienced, millennial
generation will have more roles in the workplace. However, no generation survived so long.
They will also be replaced by the next generation. Its time to see the development of
generation Z. How will they adapt and work together with generation X and millennial later.
J. Millennials Like Flexible Working Hours
Working from eight in the morning until the fout in the afternoon, is the rule of the baby
boomers generation and generation X. For millennials, prefer flexible working hours. Even
though they work flexible hours, they are still responsible. So don’t be surprised, if your
millennials employees choose to go to work at 10am or even before noon. This is one of the
factors that millennials want that is considered to be lacking is in discipline and unreasonable,
but uniquely, the world technology companies develop this way and as a result, the company
becomes the most profitable company in the world. Why do you have to implement flexible
working hours? The reason is simple: flexible working hours will affect their creatives ideas.
K. Millennials Prefer to be Near Leaders
If you still like to distance your self from employees, then you are not the desired part of
millennials generation. For millennials, leaders or supperiors in the office are places to seek
knowledge and exchange experiences. Because for millennials you as a leader have a lot of
knowledge and experience that is expensive. Why this can be included in the desired factors
millennial. For millennials, their leaders will provide a lot of new knowledge and experience
and this cannot be obtained during education or schooling. It even provides an opportunity to
apply everything that is found in the education bench, because the world of work and school
is really very different. That is why many millennials choose companies that have a culture
that supports their employees.
L. Millennials Generation that Always Wants to Know
Many say the millennials generation too “kepo” or have a high curiousty, this is the main
characteristic of millennials generation. Always curious with new things, updates in any case.
Not just knowing, but want to learn and want to understand what is happening. So that the
millennial generation can maximise the opportunities available, even changing the
weaknesses into strengths is their characteristic. It is too curious to be a bad thing, but finding
out new things will provide new innovations. This is what makes millennials always discover
new things, little things that become their trademark. You who own the company, give room
for your millennial employees to explore their curiousty for the development of your
company and their comfort.
M. Millennial Generation Wants Career Path
Like flexible working hours, always curious and want to be close to the boss there is one
factor that millennials wants besides that. Namely the millennials generation wants to get
positive
progress in their lives, especially careers. This is an achievement that they want, for
example, succeed in finding new things that are useful for others or may be reaching career
paths. This is the desired factor of millennials, achieving careers path with their own abilities,
without the ease of others or those closest to them, all achievements with their own hardwork.
N. Millennials Prefer to Work in Social Environments
The millennial generation is not a generation that is difficult to socialize even though they
realy like or spend more time in front of their computers. It is proven that the millennials
prefer to work in social environment with many people so they can exchange the ideas or
collaborate. The reason they like to work in groups is because they really like getting in put
and ideas from others to perfect their ideas. Thus they hope to become individuals who make
a lot of positive contributions. In addition to thingking about millennials employees, you
should also think about your others employees. Paying attention to all employees will
increase employee engagement in your company. They are some of the most important
employee engagement trends in 2019 that can inspire you. Urbanhire as a recruitment

O. Economic factors
Millennials participate in work because of the lack of economic costs such as food, clothing,
and other costs, so they require work to have enough economy fot their daily needs, because
at this time very much requires a large living cost, so inevitably have to work.
P. Technology factor
Technologies such as computers, printers, photocopyes, etc. make it easier for employees to
do work, for example if employees want to copy files or documents do not need to leave the
office and require costs.
Q. Health insurance
the existence of health insurance can reduce the cost of living of employees so they can work
without the need to think about the burden of life that is so heavy.
R. Facilities
with the facilities such as air conditioning, small kitchen, chairs, tables and so on can make
employees feel more comfortable so they work well and comfortably.
S. Place of worship
with a place of pray such as a mosque for Muslims can provide comfort for employees and
more comfortable in performing worship with solemn and quiet work.

3.2 COMPARING THE RESEARCH

gen-z?hs_amp=true Millenials usually use Computer and other electronic
things because Millenials want something in instant way/easy way. They will
feel terrible if there is no computer in their office or if they forget their phone
when they go out they will so terrible. Based on our research, The Millenials
Employee feels not satisfy with the company fasilities if there is no computer,
even the workplace is comfortable for them but Computer and other electronic
devices is very important and impatful to them.

Depends on our research with make Google Form, there are many Millennials Employee in
PT.PLN (PERSERO) feels statisfied because the company give them many facilities like
health assurance also computer/PC and many other facilities, and they feels comfort with
their workplace situation But also some Millennials employee not statisfied enough and have
a bad situation in their workplace. And according to our Question number 3 which is “Is the
two factors above affect you at your job?” And the result of the answer is 100% Yes it is
affect to their job. So, because of that result we conclude that usually and even all the
Millennials wants a Comfortable and Condusieve situation in workplace for example like
they want their workplace be hemmed in many good people and supporting people so they
can grow together. Also they want clean and neat workplace.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1 CONCLUSION
In our opinion about How To Engage Millenial According To Milleninal based on
questionare that we already share in PT.PLN we conclude that most of 50 Millenials in that
company mention the environment is the most important thing in workplace because if the
environment in that company is good, so the relation between the employee will impact their
performance to be increase. Also according to them the facilities in a company are also very
important because most of them always mantion about their satisfaction about the facility in
their office for example like Computer,Printer,Car,etc. So, based on our opinion facilities is
very important too cause it help them to work and even some of them cannot work if there is
no facilities like computer or printer moreover for the risky job it is very important to fulfill
the K3 (Keamanan Keselamatan Kerja) standard.

5.2 RECOMMENDATION
- We recommend the company to fulfill the standard first for example computer
because there are still employee that doesn’t have computer or printer in their
workplace and after that the company can add more interesting facilities like
gym, salon, spa and massage to engage the Millenials to company.
- To improve K3 standards, because based on the questionare that we already
spread some employees mentioned that K3 in the company did not fulfill the
standard like a safety helmet, safety glasses, mask, etc.
- For the environment, we recommend the leader of the company can make the
evaluation not just about performance but also about the relation between
every employees.
