CHAPTER 1

Introduction and Background of the Study

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognised the spread of

COVID-19 as a pandemic on 11 March 2020 as Italy, Iran, South Korea,

and Japan reported surging numbers of cases. Later that month, the

number of cases outside of China quickly surpassed the number of cases

inside China. In June 2020, the United Netiions warned that the world was

facing the worst food crisis in half a century due to the recession caused by

the pandemic.

Restaurants play a big role for the economy, restaurants provides jobs to

people in the community, who, in turn are likely to spend their wages at

local shops. In addition, local restaurants and other businesses are much

more likely to support local events and give back to the community. In the

recent years, the rapid modernization and expansion of the Philippine food

retail industry have led to the increase of national and upscale supermarket

chains throughout the country , With malls closed and physical distancing

in place, how can restaurants survive the economic setback brought by the
deadly virus? As the outbreak continues to spread, restaurants have been

forced to change operations, cancel gatherings and even close. It’s still

difficult to imagine a post-COVID world, as the entire planet is still battling

the pandemic. Although some continue to operate via delivery and

takeouts, majority of the micro, small, and medium enterprises are finding it

difficult to compete with household names and big restaurant groups. The

first hurdle that most owners, if not all, faced when the Enhanced

Community Quarantine (ECQ) had started is how to sustain the livelihood of

their employees.

Moreover, the researchers’ interest in questions of situation and

prepairations of businessman/businesswoman of how they run this

business. The researcher wants to examine the Owners’ interest to start a

business.

Statement of the Problem

To guide the thesis for understanding significant problems and provide solutions,

the requirement of research questions is vital in every research. The research question

will track all the required information in sequential order and helps the research to
present the best knowledge towards the topic. Thus, this study aims to know on how they

run the business even though pandemic is in there.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following question:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondent in terms of:

1.1. Income

1.2. gender

1.3. Occupation

2. What type of strategies or techniques of the owners that they use to run the business in

a risky situation because of pandemi?

3. What are the facets that acts as motivators owner across different traditional and

nontraditional sectors? How these motivational factors are influencing the performance of

employees to make the work?

4. What financial and moral challenges are being faced by the owner in their business?

5. What are the management practices of owner?

Scope and Limitation of the Study

particularly the owner and the employees. This research conducted on profit making

privateentrepreneurial ventures that produce and sell the products and services, thus,

study.

Yes, this study applies the role that these entrepreneurs play in their perspective

communities and to a large extent on the country’s economy. There have been very few

studies on entrepreneurship in the Philippines. Thus, searching literature regarding

entrepreneurship is also a very challenging task.

The research analysis focused on the extent to which young people where prepared

to establish their own businesses and the relationships between the criteria associated

with business readiness and students’ socioeconomic characteristics, such as academic

major and academic programs. The respondent’s readiness to start a business was based

on the following criteria:

(1) Having a specific concept for the business;

(2) Knowledge of the extent of the financial resources needed to start the business;

(3) Possession of the funds necessary to start their own business activity; and
