CHAPTER I
1.1 INTRODUCTION
1.1.1 Background of the paper

When you think of today’s teens you might assume that they all belong to the Millennial
generation. But while Millennials will continue to influence culture for decades to come, if you
are now raising teens, it’s likely that they belong to Generation Z, a new and emerging
generation of teenagers.

Even though research into Gen Z is in its infancy, two things are consistently agreed upon by
students of culture: Gen Z teens are now on the scene, and 2) they, like all previous generations,
will carve out their own unique characteristics and have their own distinctive values, attitudes
and behaviors.

Researchers have started turning the lens of examination on Gen Z. One recent study by
Northeastern University compiled information obtained from surveys of over 1,000 teens 16-19,
and this study may be one of the first to attempt to build our understanding of this new
generation.

Here are some characteristics of today’s teens that were obtained through the study:

• Today’s teens are concerned about the costs of going to college and the debt that is often part of
the college experience.
• Two in three fear they might not be able to find a job after college.
• Four in ten expect to be self-employed during their adult career.
• More than half believe that anyone should have a right to become a U.S. citizen no matter how
they enter the country.
• Half receive their news online. Only two in ten get news from watching television.
• While technology is simply a part of everyday life for teens, two in three (69%) prefer to
interact with friends in-person over interacting online, with only 15% preferring online.
• 70% would not use electronic methods (online, phones, texting, etc.) to ask someone out on a
date.

CHAPTER II
2.1 THEORY AND DISCUSION

2.1.1 What's in a Name?

Have you ever heard of Generation Z? You may be a member of it! If not, you certainly know
someone who falls into the group of people born after 1995-2005, depending on which sources
you refer to. While the name is probably a placeholder for the eventual title this group will hold,
it's time we got on board with it, at least temporarily. The naming of a generation is a slow
process with ambiguous names for generations until well after the fact. For example, Generation
X was originally termed 'Baby Busters' because of the sharp drop off in birth rates between that
generation and the previous one, the 'Baby Boomers.' That name didn't stick, and Generation Z
likely won't either. There are several potential names floating around for Generation Z right now,
such as the Plurals, iGen, Generation Wii, and Homeland Generation. Only in time will we know
what the label for this generation will end up being, and there is a great chance that it will
contain a defining feature we have not yet considered or observed.

2.1.2 Birthdates of Generation Z

There is not yet consensus from social scientists about the exact birthdates that would place
people as members of Generation Z. Some sources have it starting as early as 1995, while others
start it as late as 2005. Social scientists tend to come to a slow consensus regarding what does or
does not define a generation, especially since no one knows beforehand what or when the
defining experiences for a generation will be. The children born in 1920 didn't know they were
going to fight and succeed in World War II, nor did they know the feats that would be carried out
in their lifetimes. They are known as the Greatest Generation only due to this hindsight
knowledge. The generation before Generation Z, most commonly known as the Millennials, is
commonly accepted to start somewhere in the early 80s. Since most cohorts have typically been
defined in 18- to 24-year groups, this means the start of Generation Z is somewhere around the
year 2000, give or take a few years.
2.1.3 Generation Z characteristics
1. Their media consumption habits differ from previous generations—even millennials.

2. They prefer cool products over cool experiences.

3. Entrepreneurial and tech-savvy are two Generation Z characteristics.

4. They respond to edgy campaigns.

5. They want to co-create culture—and they do.

2.1.4 What are the advantage of being born into GenerationZ? Is it a bad thing?

Every generation has advantages and disadvantages. The struggles that Millennials, and now
Generation Z, face are the opinions of the older generations. Every generation has criticized the
younger generation, Millennials were born into a time when the older generations had a national
platform to share their negative experiences.

The Greatest Generation talked about how Baby Boomers were lazy and entitled, they said it to
each other over dinner, at the local diner or while playing cards on Saturday night. Times have
changed, if we have something to say all we have to do is reach over to our phones and type in
our opinion and hit send. Now everyone knows you have something to say about the “entitled”
Millennial at work.

If you’re a Millennial or a Generation Z never think you’re bad or the people around you are
“bad.” You’re young and growing up and trying to figure out who you are and what you want.

Just like Millennials, you’re under a microscope, which makes it harder for you to make
mistakes.

One big advantage that Generation Z has is they seem to be more mentally prepared for life after
school. Many Millennials graduated during the 2008 recession and were shocked to find how
hard it was for them to find and keep a job.
Many Generation Z-ers watched their parents struggle through those years and they’re more
open to taking a different life path. Many are rethinking college and don’t want to be drowning
in student debt. Many believe there are other ways to gain valuable information and experience
besides college.

I’m excited to see how this generation will shape and change our world.

2.1.5 The reason why z generation become more toxic.

First of all in this generation technology is more advance then before. They can access
everything from their gadget (include porn). Some parent didn’t watch them very firm. Some
parent gave permission to their children to have a gadget before they old enough for using it.

2.1.6 The deficiency generation Z

They are also impatient, tend to solve problems using instant ways. Big ego. They are also
indifferent to the environment because it is busy with the digital world.

2.1.7 What the diferent about Z generation and Y generation

1. While Generation Y spent money boldly and with few boundaries, 57% of Generation Z
prefers saving money to spending it.

2. While Generation Y spent loads of time at the mall, Generation Z prefers shopping online for
almost all their purchases… except for online games. Hmmm.

3. While Generation Y grew up during a strong economy, Generation Z is growing up in a time

of recession, terrorism, violence, volatility, and complexity.

4. While Generation Y subscribed to everything social, Generation Z doesn’t want to be tracked,

preferring Snapchat, Secret, or Whisper to communicate.

5. While Generation Y watched YouTube, Hulu and Netflix, Generation Z wants to co-create,
live stream, and help to make up the activity as they participate.
6. While Generation Y loved sports and adventure, Generation Z sees sports as a health tool, not
for play. Their games are inside. Teen obesity has tripled since 1970.

7. While Generation Y grew up with slightly longer attention spans, Generation Z has an
attention span of 8 seconds. Approximately 11% have ADHD.

8. While Generation Y initiated text messages as a norm, Generation Z prefers communicating

through images, icons and symbols.

9. While Generation Y worried about their growing social status and their “likes” on social
media, Generation Z worries about the economy and world ecology.

10. While Generation Y enjoyed a life that revolved around them, Generation Z plans on coping
with multi-generational households and marriages (400% increase).

2.1.8 How to solve of Z generation

1.Supervise children in internet use, convey what sites are allowed and should not be opened.
Ask the child to tell you what to do when using the internet

2.Provide direction to reduce dependence on gadgets.

3. Give a model in simple actions.

4. Children are taught to be aware of where they live.
