A. Definition of Giving Direction

Giving Direction is one of the materials expressing English which is useful


for expressing questions and giving directions to others. In Giving Direction or
known as giving responses to a question asked by someone (who incidentally does
not understand a place) to someone who already knows clearly where the place is.

B. Purpose of Giving Direction

The purpose of Giving a Direction is to provide information about a place,


be it about the general or specific about the Directions of a place.

1. Useful expressions

These are some expressions to be remembered to ask or giving directions. You


will need these to start learning how to get good direction you need.

Asking for directions

 How do you get to (the) . . . (from here)?


 What’s the best way to …?
 How do I get to …?
 What’s the quickest way of getting to your office?
 Where are you exactly
 Can you tell me the best way of getting to your office?
 Can you tell me how to get to (the) . . . ?
 Can you give me directions to (the) . . . ?
 What’s the best way to get to (the) . . . ?
 Where is (the) . . . ? (This is also used in asking about location.)

2. DIALOGUE

Ani : Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the public hospital?

Ben : Sure, the hospital is on Waras Avenue, about 10 minutes away by car. Go
one block to the north on this street until you come to the traffic light.

Ani : Go one block to the north to the traffic light.


Ben : Right. Then, turn right and go two more blocks, until you come to the
end of the road. A cinema will be in front of you.

Ani : Turn right and go for two blocks to the cinema.

Ben : Correct. Next, turn left and go five blocks to Sehat Avenue.

Ani : Turn left and go for five blocks to Sehat Avenue.

Ben : Then, turn left on Sehat Avenue and go for three blocks. The hospital is
on your right, across from a nice park.

Ani : Okay, let me see if I’ve got this right. Go north on this street for one
block to the traffic light. Turn right at the light and go two blocks to the
cinema. Turn left at the cinema and go five blocks to Sehat Avenue. At the
Avenue, turn right and…

Ben : No, turn left on Sehat Avenue.

Ani : Okay, turn left on Sehat Avenue, the hospital is three blocks down, on
my right.

Ben : You got it.

Ani : Thank you very much.

 Ben : You’re welcome.

4. GRAMMAR FOCUS ( modals/ auxalary)


Modal verb - a verb (such as can, could, shall, should, ought to, will,
or would) that is usually used with another verb to express ideas such as
possibility, necessity, and permission

Auxiliary verb - a verb (such as have, be, may, do, shall, will, can,


or must) that is used with another verb to show the verb's tense, to form a
question, etc.
All modal verbs are auxiliary verbs, which means they can only be used
with a main verb. Modal verbs cannot be a main verb.
The modal verbs are; will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, might
and must. In this module we focus on will and would, and shall and
should.

 Will

Will is used to show desire, preference, choice or consent:


- I will accept your offer.
- Will you please be quiet?

To show the future:


- It will be a great party.
- I will probably go out tonight.

To express capability:
- The ship will take three hundred guests.
- This bottle will hold two litres of wine.

To express determination or insistence:


- I will pass my driving test.
- I will do as you say.

 Would

Would – used to show preference


- I would rather go to the cinema today. 

Would – to show a wish


- I would like to have more free time.

Would – for advice


- If I were you, I would study economics.

 Shall
Shall – to make a suggestion
- Shall we dance?
- Shall I go now?

Shall for obligation in very formal situations


- You shall obey the rules.
- Students shall not enter here.
- There shall be no food and drink on the premises.

 Should

Should is often used to give an opinion, to make a suggestion, express a


preference or an idea.
- You should stay at home if you are feeling tired.
- I should walk to work.
- He should be more open to ideas.

Should – to ask for an opinion.


- Should we tell him about our idea?
- What should we do now?
