LUNGS

The Lungs govern Qi and respiration

 This is the most important Lung function
 From the air, the Lungs extract ‘clean Qi’ for the body, which then combines with
Food-Qi coming from the Spleen.
 The combination of air from the Lungs and Food-Qi from the Spleen forms Gathering
Qi.

 The ‘Simple Questions’ in chapter 5 says: ‘Heavenly Qi goes to the Lung.’2

‘Heavenly Qi’ here indicates air.
 Gathering Qi can be tonified by using Ren-17.
 If Lung-Qi is strong, the circulation of Qi and Blood will be good and the limbs will be
warm.
 If Lung Qi is weak, Qi will not be able to push the Blood, and the limbs, particularly
the hands, will be cold.

The Lungs control channels and blood vessels

 Heart controls the blood vessels.
 Lungs maintaining the health of blood vessels.

The Lungs control the diffusing of defensive Qi to the skin and

muscles
 The Lungs have the function of diffusing or spreading Defensive Qi and Body Fluids
to the space between skin and muscles.
 This is one way in which the Lungs are physiologically related to the skin.
 The diffusing of Defensive Qi to all over the body under the skin.
 This maintains the function of protecting the body from exterior pathogenic factors.

The Lungs control the diffusing body fluids to the skin and muscles
 The lungs also diffusing the body fluids to the space between skin and muscles.
 This maintains the opening and closing of pores in skin.
 The over sweating is caused due to too opening of pores.
 The absence of sweating is caused due to too closing of pores in entry of
external pathogens.

 The diffusing of Lung-Qi can be stimulated by LU-7.

The Lungs control the descending of Qi

 Lung-Qi must descend to communicate with the Kidneys and these respond by
‘holding’ Qi.
 If Lung-Qi does descend then, Qi will accumulate in the chest, causing cough,
breathlessness and a feeling of oppression of the chest.
 In some cases, it may affect the function of the Large Intestine.
 Because it receives lung Qi for defecation. So, lungs Qi deficiency and not
descending causes constipation.

 The diffusing of Lung-Qi can be stimulated by LU-7.

The Lungs regulate Water passages

 The lungs send the pure fluids to the skin and muscles.
 If this function is impaired, the fluids may accumulate under the skin and give rise to
oedema.
 The Lungs also direct fluids down to the Kidneys and Bladder.
 The Kidneys receive the fluids and vaporize them back to the Lungs to keep them
moist.
 The remaining part from kidney goes to the bladder to excrete as a urine.
 If it is impaired, there may be urinary retention, especially in old people.

The Lungs manifest in the body hair
 The Lungs diffuse Defensive Qi and fluids to the skin and hair.
 If the Lungs do not diffuse Qi and fluids properly, the body hair will have a withered,
brittle and dry quality.

The Lungs open into the nose

 The nose is the opening of the Lungs, and through it respiration occurs.
 If Lung-Qi is strong, the nose will be open, breathing will be easy and the sense of
smell will be normal.
 Lung-Qi deficient: weak sense of smell (LU-7, L.I.-4).
 Invasion of Wind: runny nose (LU-7, L.I.-4, BL-12 and BL-13).
 Dampness: blocked nose (LU-7, L.I.-4, and Du-23).
 Lung-Heat: nosebleed (LU-5 and L.I.-11).

The Lungs house the Corporeal Soul

 The Corporeal Soul is formed at conception.
 But, the Ethereal Soul enters the body 3 days after birth.
 The Corporeal Soul dies with the body
 But, the Ethereal Soul survives at death.
 On an emotional level, the Corporeal Soul is directly affected by emotions of
sadness, grief and worry, which constrain its feelings and obstruct its movement.
 The worry knots Qi and causes Qi stagnation in chest, which leads to feeling of
tightness of the chest, slight breathlessness and tension of the shoulders.
 In women, it affects the breasts and t is the root for breast lumps.
 Sadness and grief deplete Qi and this can observed in the Lung pulse becoming
weak and fine.
 This leads to weak, feeble and weepy voice.

 The best points to treat the Lungs Corporeal Soul is affected by worry, sadness or
grief are LU-7 and BL-42.

The smell of the Lungs is rotten

 The smell related to the Lungs is described as ‘rotten’.
 This is the smell of purulent sputum in a chest infection of the lungs.
 This is mostly due to lung heat and phlegm heat in lungs.

The colour of the Lungs is white

 In diagnosis, pale-white cheeks reflect a deficiency of Lung-Qi.

The taste of the Lungs is pungent

 The pungent taste including spicy is related to the Lungs.
 A small amount of pungent (spicy) taste in the diet will gently tonify the Lungs.
 An excessive consumption of foods with a pungent taste may either weaken Lung-
Yin or lead to Lung- Heat.

The climate of the Lungs to be affected is dryness

 An excessively dry climate injures the Lung-Yin.
 The Lungs need to be kept moist at all times and the ‘vapour’ released by the heating
action of Kidney-Yang rises to the Lungs to keep them moist.
 Excessive dryness can also be found in certain industrial environments.

The sound of the Lungs after affected is weeping

 A person suffering from Lung deficiency may tend to speak with a ‘weepy’ tone and
burst into tears.
 The weeping and crying themselves are the sounds related to the Lungs as the
Lungs are affected by sadness and grief.
