LUNGS ( 肺 FÈI)

LUNGS ( 肺 FÈI)

• Govern Qi and respiration

• Control diffusing and descending of Qi and body fluids
• Regulate the water passage
• Control channels and blood vessels (fei chao bai mai)
• Open into nose
• Related to sadness/melancoly.
• House the Po - (the Corporeal Soul)
• Control the skin and the space between skin and muscles
• Dominates body hair
LUNGS ( 肺 FÈI)

• The Lungs(Yin-Zang) is
interiorly and exteriorly
coupled with the Large
Intestine (Yang- Fu)

• Describe the pathway of

the lung primary
channel?
LUNGS ( 肺 FÈI)
LUNGS ( 肺 FÈI)- 6 DIVISIONS

• Lungs are related to Tai yin in the six divisions theory.

• Six division theory relates channels via anatomical locations

on the body.

• The Spleen channel is the corresponding leg Tai Yin channel

GOVERNS QI AND RESPIRATION

• Inhale heavenly Qi (air)

• Air(lung)+food Qi(spleen)→gathering Qi(zong Qi)
• Govern gathering Qi in the chest

• The Lungs inhale pure Qi and exhale dirty Qi- Respiration.

• Lungs extract clean Qi form the air, this combines with
Gu/food Qi from the Spleen to form gathering Qi(zong Qi)
GOVERNS QI AND RESPIRATION

• Gathering Qi(zong Qi) forms in the Chest. Lungs circulate the

Qi all over the body to nourish the tissues.
• Lungs connect the body to the outside world through
respiration. They are the most external Yin organ.
• Lungs are easily attacked by exterior pathogenic factors;
referred to as the “tender” organ.
DIFFUSING (DISPERSING)

• The lungs disperse Defensive (Wei) Qi and body fluids, all

over the body to the space between the Skin and Muscles.
• This ensures Wei Qi is evenly distributed. The Wei Qi warms
the skin and muscles, and protects the body from external
pathogenic factors.
• When you get a cold, what do you think happened to the
lungs dispersing function?
DIFFUSING (DISPERSING)

• The lungs diffuse a fine mist of body fluids to the skin. The
mist moistens the skin, and regulates opening and closing of
the pores- sweating.

• The mist gives the skin and hair nourishment and moisture.

• If the lung function of Diffusing body fluids is impaired what

do you think might happen? -Oedema.
DESCENDING

• Lungs act like a lid- as the highest organ.

• Lung Qi must descend to the kidneys. The Kidney “holds" or
“grasps” the Qi.
• Lungs also descends body fluids to the kidney and bladder for
excretion.
• Lung Qi- must connect to the Large intestine to aid food
transit and defecation.

• What do you think might happen if Lung Qi cannot descend?

DIFFUSING(DISPERSING) AND
DESCENDING
DIFFUSING(DISPERSING) AND
DESCENDING
REGULATE WATER PASSAGE(FLUIDS
METABOLISM)
• Diffusing body fluids to the
space between skin and
muscles. This brings moisture
to the skin.
• Descending body fluids to the
kidneys and bladder. The
kidneys vaporize and send
some fluids back to the lungs-
to keep the lungs moist.
• The lungs do not like to be dry
or cold so must be kept moist
and warm.
REGULATE WATER PASSAGE(FLUIDS
METABOLISM)
• Lungs can affect urination, through descending fluids to the
bladder.
• Lungs influences excretion of body fluids through urination
and sweating.
CONTROL CHANNELS AND BLOOD
VESSELS(FEI CHAO BAI MAI)
• This is a re-emphasis of the function of the Lungs governing
Qi. Lungs control circulation of Qi in the vessels and
channels.
• “Qi is the commander of the Blood”. Qi is essential for the
Heart to circulate blood.
• If lung Qi is healthy then the circulation will be good. If it is
weak, then Qi cannot propel the blood and the circulation will
be poor- e.g cold hands.
OPEN INTO NOSE

• The nose is the opening of the Lung.

• Problems with the nose are seen as a problem with the Lungs

• Exterior wind/cold invades the Lungs —runny nose, sneezing;

• Exterior heat/dampness invades the Lungs —blocked nose;
bleeding,
HOUSE THE PO - (THE CORPOREAL SOUL)

• Po - (the Corporeal Soul) is the Yin counterpart to the Hun

(Ethereal soul- Liver).
• Po is the most material/physical part of the spirit or soul.
• Po is linked to the idea of the “Vital Breath”. It resides in the
lungs and is a direct manifestation of the breathe of life.
• Po is affected by sadness and grief.
LUNGS GOVERN THE VOICE

• The Lung Qi and gathering Qi(zong Qi), affect the voice.

When the Lung Qi is deficient than the voice may be weak and
not carry. When the lung Qi is strong will be clear and strong.
DISCUSS IN GROUPS

• Which function of the Lung is impaired in the following situations?

• A person who coughs, is breathless and has a feeling of oppression in the chest

• A person whose skin is rough and dry

• A person who has a heavy cold with aversion to cold

• A person who has oedema, usually of the face

• A person who has spontaneous sweating and is prone to attack by exterior

pathogenic factors, such as catch a cold easily
• Working in pairs see if you can remember the functions of the
lungs.
• Task to do at home: go to Anatomy Tv, via the library or
LSBU homepage. Click on acupuncture, and walk the path of
the lung channel, use Anatomy TV to look at the anatomy of
the Lung. put the following link into your Url- log in to your
LSBU account- under sports & therapy click on Acupuncture,
then contents, meridians , then the Lung channel. Use the
functions to explore the software, organ and channel.
