Writing Practice

An opinion essay
Very often you will have to express your own opinion on something. It is important to remember that,
generally, convincing somebody does not rely necessarily on the strength of the ideas but rather on how
you present them. Your opinion s must be supported by examples, facts and experiences from your life. It
is your job to convince the reader that your opinion is valid.

Paragraph 1. Introduction
►Introduce the topic with a fact.
►Present you ideas clearly and precisely.

Opinions for and against capital punishment are in newspapers daily. The press, above all in Europe, is radically against
capital punishment. In my opinion there is nothing more sacred than life. Nevertheless, I am in favour of capital
punishment.

Paragraph 2. Body
►Give examples and reasons for your opinion.
► Explain your arguments clearly and dispassionately.
►You can split this paragraph up into two smaller ones, to explain two separate reasons which
support your opinion.

First, let us consider the reasons for capital punishment. Murder is a serious crime, and the person who commits murder is
taking a human being’s life. Does the threat of having his or her own life taken actually stop potential criminals from
committing atrocious crimes? More often than not, t he answer to that question is no. Studies have shown that the threat of
being executed by the state does not stop criminals from committing acts of horror. More murders and rapes occur each
passing day. Even so, a murderer must be aware that his or her cr ime will be punished: he or she will be executed.

Paragraph 3. Conclusion
►Conclude and give your solution.
►Use modal verbs: should /ought to, have to, must, to express your opinion.

These crimes and the people who commit them must be punished. It is up to society to punish criminals.
Consequently, the only possible punishment is capital punishment. The solution given in the Old Testament of “an eye for
an eye…” provides us with the only possible solution.
