Dear Parent/Guardian

Every two years the Bromley Youth Council (BYC) work in partnership with local schools and
projects to host Youth Elections. This is to give young people skills and confidence in our democratic
system and to give them the skills to vote once they are 18 years old. The elections will elect two
Eden Park High students to become Youth Councilors. This is a great way to get students involved
in making real decisions and local democracy. The School Council are offered the opportunity to
facilitate the elections event by acting as polling clerks and they will also undertake the count and
have the result.

The candidates build their confidence in the process and are able to network outside of school and
participate in campaigns, events and projects that make a difference to other young people living,
being educated and growing up in Bromley.

There is a short video on YouTube outlining the role of a Youth Councilor and the process is really
easy. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTZds-8W3N4 – YouTube video).

Students will need to complete a booking and registration form and present themselves to the
student body in assemblies and run for election.

The two elected Youth Councilors will be invited to an information evening, a training event and
will begin a two-year term of office. Their role will be to report back to the school and to share
their skills and knowledge with our team and student voice about BYC work, campaigns, events
etc. They will be required to meet at calendared events held throughout the year at the Bromley
Civic Centre. These will be hosted and arranged by the Bromley Youth Council.

The Bromley Youth Council have their own roles and responsibilities and create opportunities for
elected young people to attend the London Borough of Bromley Portfolio meetings, sit on the
Safeguarding Board, become British Youth Council members, UK Youth Parliament members,
London Youth Assembly members and much more.

If you would like your child to be involved you can email me directly and I will arrange a short
meeting.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely
