REDEVELOPMENT OF WAHDAT COLONY LAHORE
Introduction
The shelter is the basic need of everyone, there are limited resources and
due to the high prices of land in an urban area, the way of living, housing, urban density,
and human social life transforming rapidly. It is the demand of time to develop the
dwellings with the sense of community and sustainability. Likewise other local
communities Wahdat Colony is underrated because of lack of facilities, living quality
and achieved density. This is imperative to develop this prime area in Lahore city with
the practice of enhancing a livable and sustainable community.
Project description
Wahdat Colony Lahore was developed in 1956 on 2032 Kanal of
Government Land. The development provides housing to approximately 1818 families
of Government Employees of Scale 17 and below. Most of the houses are single story.
Wahdat Colony is a low-density residential area that lacks modern amenities, which are
necessary for a modern lifestyle. The density of this area is low with respect to its
neighborhood. Housing structures are tempered with time. The area needs to be
redeveloped to increase its density and provide a higher number of housing units as
well as modern community standards.
The latest decision by the government of Punjab is to better utilize the central
Lahore land. Lahore has limited and very expensive land due to high population growth
Lahore population is increasing by 0.45 million per year (world population review) with
an average growth rate of 2%(Census 2017). It is very necessary to properly use land
within Lahore city instead of expanding its boundaries.

Multi-unit dwellings:
The general principle for the multi-unit dwelling is that is
convenient to construct 1+2 stories without lifts. In areas where the land prices are
high and access to the jobs and shopping is highly desired, 1+3 stories may be
permitted without the installation of lifts.
