ASSIGNMENT – ROAD GEOMETRIC DESIGN

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM – DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

TOPIC : STOPPING SIGHT DISTANCE AND PASSING SIGHT DISTANCE

Name : NIM : Class :

1. A conscientious driver (reaction time 0.6 seconds) runs downhill at a slope of Y% at a speed of
3X mph over a dry road when suddenly a person appears from behind a car parked exactly on
the driver's lane at 1YX ft. Can the driver stop in time?
2. A normal driver (reaction time 2.X seconds) drives a car that moving at speed of 4X mph on
two-lane highway. The driver wants to pass the slow vehicle (speed of slow vehicle 3X mph). At
the opposite side, there is a car moving at a speed of 5X mph. Calculate the passing sight
distance which is necessary in order for a passing maneuver to be carried out safely. Some
assumptions you should be aware are listed below:
Passing vehicle’s acceleration rate : 1.YX mph/sec
Passing speed of passing vehicle : 5X mph
Length of passing vehicle : 19 ft
Length of slow vehicle : 39.5 ft
Clearance distance between passing and slow vehicles at lane change : 20 ft
Clearance distance between passing and slow vehicles at lane re-entry : 20 ft
Clearance distance between passing and opposing vehicles at lane re-entry : 250 ft
Compare your calculation with value recommended by AASHTO and Binamarga
