you can do is have a carbon
monoxide detector in your
home, Mitchell said, partic-
ularly near water heaters,
furnaces and gas stoves.
The Maryland General
Assembly passed a bill in
2007 that required carbon
monoxide alarms be in-
stalled in specified
dwellings constructed after
Jan. 1, 2008, but people with
older homes can easily pur-
chase them at a hardware
store. Detectors typically
cost $20 to $60.
“Carbon monoxide gives
no warning,” Mitchell said.
“It’s colorless, it’s odorless
and it does not take a very
large amount to kill you.”
Carbon monoxide binds
to the hemoglobin in the
blood, which carries oxygen
through the body. So you
can be in a room with
plenty of oxygen, Mitchell
said, but be unable to use it.

Kerosene heaters, which are
sometimes used as space
heaters, should be properly
ventilated as well, he said,
even if that means cracking
a window open.
The first signs of carbon
monoxide poisoning gen-
erally are a headache, nau-
sea or dizziness, he said.

gets calls about a lot of
people with headaches at
the same time, one of the
first things they ask about
is the furnace and water
heater and whether they
are properly ventilated.
“It’s a very short distance
from when you first start
feeling sick to having a po-
tentially lethal exposure,”
