Magnetic Circuits and Electromagnetic Induction

1) A magnetic circuit as shown in Fig. is made from a laminated steel. The breadth of the
steel core is 40 mm and the depth is 50 mm, 8% of it is an insulator between the
laminatings. The length and the area of the airgap are 2 mm and 2500 mm 2
respectively. A coil is wound 800 turns. If the leakage factor is 1.2, calculate the
current required to magnetize the steel core in order to produce flux of 0.0025 Wb
across the airgap. (5A)

2) A magnetic circuit made of silicon steel is arranged as in the Figure. The center limb has
a cross-section area of 800mm2 and each of the side limbs has a cross-sectional area of
500mm2. Calculate the m.m.f required to produce a flux of 1mWb in the central limb,
assuming the magnetic leakage to be negligible. (1007AT)

3) A conductor of active length 30 cm lies at right angles to a magnetic field of flux density
0.4 Wb/m2. If the conductor moves at a velocity of 10 m/s, calculate the emf induced in
it. (1.2V)

a closed ring and when a current of 0.6A is passed through it, the flux density in it is

the current through the coil is interrupted and the value of the flux in iron portion falls
to 8% of its original value in 0.0015 sec. (42.6,1.289H,474.4V)

5) The main diameter of the steel ring is 40cm and the flux density of 0.9 T is produced by

calculate i) the exciting current ii) self inductance in henry iii) the exciting current and

same, ignore leakage and fringing. (10A,0.0594H,26.2A;0.02267H)

ohm and a non-inductive line of 40 ohm resistance and relay of 15 ohm resistance and
1H inductance. If the armature of the relay is not attracted until the current reaches to
0.04A, what interval of the time will elapse between the closing of the circuit and when
the relay begins to operate? (0.00368sec)
