Complex Numbers

 : complex number, denoted by i.

Definition
 By definition, a complex number z is an ordered pair (x, y)
of real numbers x and y, written:

 x = real part, y = imaginary part

Two complex numbers are equal if and only if both their

real parts are equal and their imaginary parts are equal.
Addition

Suppose we have

The sum of those complex numbers:

+ )
Multiplication

Suppose we have

Example

Let z1 = 4 – 5i and z2 = 7 + 12i, then determine:

Re z1, Re z2, Im z1, Im z2, z1 + z2, z1z2.
Subtraction

Reciprocal and Division

Suppose we have
Example

Let z1 = 4 – 5i and z2 = 7 + 12i, then determine: z1/z2

Polar Form of Complex Numbers
Complex numbers in Cartesian diagram:

Complex numbers in Polar diagram:

Absolute value or modulus of z = r, is

sometimes denoted by |z|
Principal value

• z = 0,  is undefined.
• z  0,  is integer multiplies of 2 (cosine and sine are periodic with period 2).
• Principal value: Arg z , to specify a unique value of arg z of a given z  0
Q:
Find the polar form of complex numbers:
z1 = 4 – 5i
z2 = 7 + 12i
