ABSTRACT:
In this case study, we shall be going through an idea of what can be done to provide a better
efficient waste bin and make the environment cleaner. We selected two bins one being the
Smart Air Bin for home and Bin –E for commercial use, in the following report you will also
see how we review both the bins which includes the advantages of using such bins and in
addition we also talk about their original manufacturing process giving our research on this
topic and how we can improve the manufacturing process.

INTRODUCTION:
Waste management operations across the world are aiming for a better cleaner environment
by managing the waste that is produced daily at homes and work places. The world is such a
big place with about 8 billion people with an average of 1.1Kg of waste produced by an
average person on a daily basis. Waste management needs to be done to prevent un-
cleanliness, which is a subject to dangerous diseases.
Smarts Waste Bins come in variety of models which have different operations in them for
example some waste bins might just have the Fill-in Feature which notifies the municipality
once the waste bin is full so that they may come and remove the waste as soon as possible.
For some others, the waste bin can be specially optimized for community usage purposes and
have ID tags presented in order for the bins to collect the waste as this reduces the amount of
waste being collected since unauthorized users will be denied due to the lack of ID Cards.
Another popular model is the Multipurpose Smart Bin which are exclusive to cities
worldwide as these bins will not only have the smart management of waste collecting but also
act as a Wi-Fi Hotspot and can also be used as public information booths which display
crucial information such as street names, important landmarks and also maps.
Smart Bins are widely beneficial to the public and surroundings compared to the traditional
bins because it can prevent bin overflow of waste and by the effective management of the
waste using real time technologies provided by the smart bins, the public can have clean bins
ready for usage and also the chances of stench will be low since the waste is removed on
time. The smart bins helps in providing a greener environment as well as effective
management and utilization of the municipality as the smart bins will give the shortest routes
via in-built GPS to the sanitation engineers so this way this will decrease the number of
drivers and vehicles to the same area and also this will also decrease the fuel consumption of
the municipality since less number of vehicles are dispatched to the area and this will in turn
save a lot of money in fuel savings.
The purpose for this is to process the waste in a systematic and effective manner and thereby
making it easier for all to dispose it without affecting the environment. Smart bins come in all
different shapes and sizes and can be used for commercial purposes, such as in an office, as
well as public places such as a park. Communities can enjoy a variety of advantageous deeds
when using smart bins, one of them is that it would stop the overflow of waste alongside the
roads and localities as they are managed in real time. The way it works is as follows; a
computer algorithm analyses the material placed in front of the camera and then tells the
consumer about the product and where to place it in its appropriate recycling bins.

The Smart Bin consists of three essential parts which are: “Outdoor Nodes, Analytics and
Workstation” (Folianto, F., Low, Y. and Yeow, W, 2015).
These are the different sub-systems within the Smart Bin mainframe

The first part or Outdoor nodes has sensor nodes and gateway nodes in them. The sensory
nodes’ primary objective is to know when the bin has reached its full capacity and also to
examine the status of the smart bin. The sensory nodes are powered by a battery and once a
reading is detected, the sensory nodes then transmit the data to the gateway node at a low
frequency possibly a radio wave. The gateway node serves the sensory node in the smart bin
as it sends the data from the sensory node to the analytics server via internet connection be it
Wi-Fi, broadband or cellular.
The second part or Analytics Server will analyse the data forwarded by the outdoor nodes and
then it will first process whatever data is sent to the server and then it will compare against
the regulations set by the technicians and also performs evasive measures when the smart bin
has reached full capacity. The analytics server receives and gathers data, marks metadata and
communicates with other external systems.
The Last part or Workstation is part of bin system which receives the information from the
analytical server and then proceeds to provide with the users of the smart bin with useful
information through a GUI or a graphical user interface which they are familiar with. The
GUI is designed in such a way that the smart bin which is being examined will be in a form
of an icon similarly of the ones in a computer and will also show its location on a map in the
operator terminal and will also display the present capacity of the bin.
TYPES OF BINS:

SMART OFFICE BIN: BIN E

REVIEW OF BIN E:
Bin E is the first quad smart bin, it comes with four categories- paper, plastic, cans and general
trash. The smart bin has analytical system on the top portion of the waste bin which includes
sensors, analytical server and workstation. Such type of smart bin can save a lot of money in the
co-operate world like offices and airports. The smart bin is constantly learning and improving on
its own as it can categorise the different type of waste material, this is basically done by the user
first placing the waste bag near the desired quadrant (Example, if the user has paper waste, the
user must place it near the “Paper” waste quadrant. By doing so the sensor built in the smart bin
will scan the waste and if it matches with the bin quadrant, then the lid will open, and the user can
dump the waste into that quadrant. If not, the lid will not open. Once one part of the quad tier bin
is full (Example- general waste bin reached full capacity) the sensors will detect the space
remaining in that part and then sends a signal to the computer embedded in the bin and will shut
the lid of the bin for that part and will issue a signal to the cleaning services to come and replace
the bin bag in that sector. Therefore, the Bin-E is not only just smart but also the container
management also runs automatically and optimizes. Through research it was found that Bin E
claims that companies and office sector will be able to save up around 30% in the fuel cost.
MANUFACTURE OF BIN E:
The bin is manufactured in a series of processes, at first the steel is moulded and pried
into dimensions. We make 4 deposit area plastic, paper, cans and general waste. The
bin comes with dimensions 1000x400x830 mm. overall volume will be 332 Litres.
Once the steel has been moulded into the following dimensions, we need to set up the
sensors and the set of wirings that require to make the bin smart. After the set-up of
wiring and sensors, it is being sent forward for polishing and painting.

IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURE OF BIN E:

1. The manufacturing process can be made effective with the use of 3D printing which
can be used to fabricate the bin. This would save up manufacturing time.
2. The use of fully automated machines would benefit the company by reducing man
power and reduce human work time. Therefore, increasing effectivity and efficiency.
3. This smart feature (same as the smart Bin E) can be placed and used in the big
garbage bins places where people aren’t able to afford a smart bin tend to dispose
waste into the bigger bins, if this feature is set up it will benefit the environment by
reducing the accumulation of waste in the waste bin.
4. The use of automated shafts at the bottom of the bin which opens up when the bin
reaches its limit, a series of sensors that apply to the bin, which leads through a flow
of pipes which meets its end at the main waste bin. The bin will recognise the waste
put in it and separate it into the columns which will be general waste, plastic, cans and
glass. This will benefit the waste management companies to prevent hassles when the
bin is full and will only come to clear the main waste bin which will have a bigger
catchment area. The main waste bin will have sensors when it reaches its capacity and
will notify the waste management companies for clearance. The new buildings that
are coming up can follow up with this idea to prevent problems. Each bin will have an
air purifier attached to it to prevent odour from disturbing the employees which
flushes the bin with purity each time the waste is disposed.
5. Another way for improvement, as a lot of buildings have their own garbage room
which when waste disposed leads to the main waste bin, an improvement in the bin
would be the bins to have an automated smart system with rollers attached to them
which moves to deposit the waste accumulated in it and dispose it at the garbage room
on the floor, the usage of automated waste bins would bring benefit to the company
by reducing man power in terms of floor by floor waste collection and only will
require collecting the overall accumulated waste at the main bin. This bin would
include a series of sensors that helps it to move around and prevents it from colliding
with any of the staff members and an obstacle, therefore providing smart features.
This bin will have 4 slots in which we can dispose paper, plastic, cans and general
waste. Which when one slot is full the smart bin automatically recognises and moves
to the destination for disposition.
SMART HOME BIN: AIR BIN

REVIEW OF AIR BIN:

Keeping in mind the earth’s environment, sustainability and eco-friendly products are
playing a significant role in preserving the earth’s nature. When it comes to
preserving, recycling plays a key role. Taking into consideration, used and unwanted
products and recycling them into something new and useful is what it is all about.
Along with recycling, decomposing of waste materials and products also amounts up
to equal importance. Even though there are many companies that collect waste from
home daily to decompose it, more needs to be done. More and more eco-friendly
products are being brought to preserve the earth’s nature.

To help with the wasted food decomposition, ‘smart bin air’ has come. Providing
ease of decomposing wasted food material into useful fertilisers used to help with the
growth of plants. The product being the size of a normal house dustbin is what makes
it unique as it can easily be placed in the kitchen without covering up too much space.
Along with its size, ‘smart bin air’ requires neither labour nor any kind of human
activity. All you need to do is to add your waste food products in to the bin and in few
days, you will be left with smart brew fertiliser. When the waste collecting companies
collect your waste, all that waste is dumped into a landfill which pollutes the
environment immensely. Within days the landfills start rotting which results in the
pollution of ground, air and water. Such landfills give birth to bacteria and all
different kinds of diseases. Whereas when using the smart bin, you would not
contribute to the addition of such landfills along with decomposing your own waste
yourself. When you could be able to decompose your waste yourself, waste collectors
would not have to sort out the dry waste thus ending up in saving human labour.
When using the smart bin, you are just six steps away from decomposing your waste food.
 Collection of all of your waste in an air tight container excluding any liquid waste.
(Avoid any contact of insects with the waste) the containers need to be tightly covered
all the time.
 Once the container fills up, empty it one inch at a time, as the smart bin has a curing
bag with layers of bio bloom air composting microbes. Make sure the bio bloom air
fills up the gaps between the one-inch layers of food waste.
 Smart bin air lids are insect proof but even then, make sure you do regular checks for
any signs of insects or insect eggs on the bin. Wash them off once spotted.
 Once the bin fills up keep it aside for ten days and continue using the next bin bag.
Once the time period is completed empty the bin and transfer the contents of the bin
to curing bag.
 Leave the curing bag aside for the next twenty to thirty days. Once the time period is
completed, empty the smart bin and you will see smart brew collected at the bottom of
the container. Already to be used as fertilisers.

Smart air bin is very hygienic as the bin is tightly sealed by the lid which makes sure no
bad odour comes out. It is neat and clean and could be placed easily in a kitchen without
disturbing the surrounding. The key factor here is money. It has a lot of value for money
as one smart bin has a life span of around ten years. Without having to invest anything
else, just putting in waste food gives out organic drain and toilet cleaner, compost and
liquid fertilisers as well. Very easy and basic to use.

MANUFACTURING THE SMART AIR BIN:

The process begins with the stainless-steel laser cutter which is used to produce the blanks
and to cut with intricate detail. Any off-cut that is obtained after the cutting takes place, will
be used for recycling. A press break will be used to convert the sheet of steel into a 3D form
and finally the stainless steel is powder coated and sent to an oven which is then introduced
to high temperatures which will ensure a high quality and durable finish. The process of
powder coating is an environmental friendly process which helps to increase the resistance of
cracking, peeling and provide very high corrosion, abrasion and chemical resistance. The rest
of the components like pedals, frames and lids are assembled by hand to finally achieve the
final product.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF
THE SMART AIR BIN:

Smart waste management is an integral part for a smart city even at the residential level.
Since the smart bin is mostly designed for converting food waste to composite waste, that
leaves no room for the general or better yet, recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Therefore,
an addition of 2 more compartments can be added to the bin which will store recyclable and
non-recyclable material which will help segregate the waste further. Although food is
considered as a recyclable material, it is necessary to be segregated from the recyclable
material and the liquid waste shouldn’t interfere with the food waste either. The designed lid
will be used for the food waste compartment since it repels insects.
Furthermore, the container that holds the 3 compartments can be made of stainless steel
which will be pricier than the regular plastic bins, but stainless steel is way more durable and
will last longer as well which means it has a better payback period than a plastic bin. In
addition, sensors can be added to the bin which will measure the fill levels and install a small
LED light that could flash up when the bin is full and let the consumer know when the bin
becomes full.
We could incorporate the same improvements for both the bin designs as we are trying to
promote a greener and safer world.
Few improvements of manufacturing that can be implemented on the bin:
1. Since the final build is assembled by hand, it would be much more efficient and
ensure a better-quality product if the employees are well trained by ensuring a
training programs to train the employees so that they are well informed in the
processes that take place and provide maximum efficiency.
2. Increasing the automation in the production of bins could help massively as it can
reduce manual labour and increase precision and quality of the product with
maximum throughput.
3. If an accident takes place on the production floor, the manufacturing processes are
brought to a halt immediately which not only could damage the equipment but also
could injured the skilled employees and also time is lost in the production of the bin.
Hence, increasing manufacturing safety can help reduce accident and loss of time
