Activity Type Introduction

Reading, listening and In this fun group activity, students play games of bingo by listening
matching activity, group to definitions and matching them to holiday words and phrases on

Procedure

Preparation

caller's sheet and bingo
cards for each group of
five and cut as indicated.
Level
The bingo caller reads out definitions of holiday words and phrases
in a random order.
After a definition has been read out, the caller puts a tick in pencil
next to the word. If students need to listen again, the caller
repeats the definition.
When a student has crossed off three squares in a row either
horizontally, vertically or diagonally, they shout 'Bingo'.

Pre-intermediate The bingo caller then gets the student to read out the crossed off
holiday words and phrases to check the answers.

Time If the words and phrases are correct, the student wins a point.
30 minutes
The students then continue the game to see who can cross off
all nine squares on their bingo card. The first student to do this
shouts 'Bingo'. If the answers are correct, the student wins a
point.

Afterwards, the students play a new game with another student

taking on the role of the bingo caller.

This continues until all the bingo cards have been used.

The student with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Read out the definitions in a random order. After you read each definition, put a tick before the
word in pencil.

____ package holiday: a holiday where you purchase travel and accommodation together
____ passport: a document you use to leave and enter a country
____ passport control: the place where your passport is checked
____ places of interest: sites of interest to tourists
____ postcard: a card you send to friends and family when you are on holiday
____ short break: a short holiday
____ self-catering: a holiday where you supply your own food
____ souvenir: something you buy on holiday which makes you think of the place you went to
____ stunning landscape: extremely beautiful countryside
____ to get away from it all: to take a holiday to escape a busy or stressful lifestyle
____ to go sightseeing: to look around tourist sites
____ travel agent: a shop that specializes in booking holidays
