LESSON RATIONALE
Kindergarten students first must understand the difference between long ago and now to continue to learn about other concepts of social studies.
Providing them with pictures of items from both long ago and now gives them mental pictures of what things were like and how that compares to the
way things are now. (CAEP K-6 1.a)

READINESS
I.Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal: Students will recognize change over time.
B. Objective: Using items from long ago and now, students will sort the items into two different groups to show the difference between long
ago and now.
C. Standards: NCSS/ IAS
a. NCSS: II – Time, Continuity, and Change
b. IAS: K.1.1 – Compare children and families of today with those from the past. Example: Compare clothing, houses, and other
objects.
II. Management Plan
a. Materials: Long ago and now video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-r-xHln6nE&t=), corded phone and disposable camera,
pictures for class sort, picture sort paper, scissors, glue
b. Time: 30 minutes
c. Space: Students will be seated on the carpet. Then, during independent practice, they will work at their desks in their table groups.
d. Behavior: Students will be told expectations to raise their hands when they want to answer and stay seated quietly at the carpet.
Students will be reminded of them throughout the lesson.
III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners
 Early finishers – Students who finish quickly will be given time to complete their morning work and/or look at the corded phone and
disposable camera from the anticipatory set.
 ELL – N/A
 Reteaching – Students will be in table groups and can work together when they need help sorting items. I will come around and check the
progress of E.H., K.R., and M.L.
 Exceptional Needs – Since we are in kindergarten, none of the students are currently diagnosed. However, students sometimes get a little
squirmy. Students will be doing hands-on work during independent practice, cutting and gluing. Also, if students become squirmy at the
carpet, I will do a quick brain break with them to give them some dopamine and to help them refocus.
 Students will have support of myself and their classroom teacher throughout the entire lesson.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION (CAEP K-6 1.b)

IV. Anticipatory Set
 I will bring in a corded phone and a disposable camera to show to the students. “Have you guys seen these things before? Do you know
what they are?” I will ask students these questions and call on individual students for responses. “This is a disposable camera. Like other
cameras, it is used to take pictures. However, unlike when you take a picture on a digital camera or a phone, you have to wait to see the
pictures until they are developed. This is a television remote from an older tv. It has far less buttons on it than a tv remote does today.” I
will allow the students to look at and interact with the items at the end of the lesson. “The function of these items is the same over time, but
they have been improved in some ways to make the function of them easier, faster, and better.”

V. Purpose: Today, we are going to learn about the difference between long ago and now and how items change over time.

VI.Lesson Presentation (Input/Output)

 I will show students a video about things from long ago versus now (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-r-xHln6nE&t=). Before
students watch the video, I will tell them to pay attention to specific items from long ago and specific items from now.
 After the video, I will ask the students a few questions. “What items did you notice that were different than things we have today? What
items did you see in the video that you or someone you know uses?”
 I will then do a long ago versus now sort on the board by the carpet. Students will participate throughout the sort. “We are going to work as
a class to sort out items like the ones in the video between long ago and now. The first item is a bonnet. A bonnet is from long ago, so I am
placing it under the long ago column. The second item is a cell phone. Is that from long ago or now?” I will call on a student to answer, and
then I will place the cell phone card underneath the now column. I will continue to do this with several other items including an open fire,
stove, different pairs of shoes, and more.
 Then, after sorting several of the items, I will have the students show me what they understand of how to sort items from what we use now
and what people used to use. I will hold up one of the item cards and have the students point to what side they think the item goes on. If it
is from long ago, it will go on the left, and if it is from now, then it will go on the right. This will help me see how students are doing with
sorting items from long ago and now.

 Students will be sent back to their seats to complete independent practice. However, they will be allowed to collaborate with peers at their
table groups. Students will be given a paper with little pictures at the bottom to cut out. They will sort the pictures into the two columns,
one labeled today and the other labeled the past. As they are working, I will walk around to each group to check on them and assist them. I
will collect these from the students to see how they did on them when they complete them.

VII. Check for understanding

 I will ask questions after students have watched the video to see what they noticed about the differences between things long ago and now.
 I will listen to students’ responses throughout the lesson to determine if the students understand the material.
 Students pointing to which side each item goes on, whether long ago or now, demonstrates an aspect of students’ understanding.
 Independent practice is a check for understanding.

VIII. Review learning outcomes / Closure – “Now that each of you have completed your own picture sort of items from long ago and now,
who can tell me one thing from long ago? And who can tell me one thing from now?” Call on a few students to answer the questions
and talk about the difference between long ago and now.

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

Formative: Asking questions during modeling and guided practice; Observing students interact with the pictures of their own and placing them in
each category; listening to students’ responses to questions during class discussion at the carpet

REFLECTION AND POST-LESSON ANALYSIS (CAEP K-6 3.b)

1. How many students achieved the lesson objective(s)? For those who did not, why not?
2. What were my strengths and weaknesses?
3. How should I alter this lesson?
4. How would I pace it differently?
5. Were all students actively participating? If not, why not?
6. What adjustments did I make to reach varied learning styles and ability levels?
7. How would I assess the students differently to see what they know about long ago and now?
