    The Assyrian civilization was an ancient empire located in northern Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt that existed from around 2550 BC to 609 BC. It was named after its capital, the city of Ashur, which was named after the Assyrian god Assur. The Assyrian Empire became the largest empire in the world at the time due to its military strength which helped protect its vulnerable geographic position.
