Foreword
Photographs are for fun and for preserving memories for all times.
Photography has become easier, enjoyable and popular with digital cameras, web
cams and camera phones.
Gone are the days when you had to buy a film roll and wait
until it was developed to see the results. Today the digital
cameras and phones have a LCD screen where you can see the
result instantly and take another photo to correct any closed
eyes or moved hands!
All the cameras come with built in memory for many pictures
and you can always buy another memory card to supplement it.
This is not about cameras and taking pictures. This article is about how to have fun
with the photos you already have taken.

What You Can Do With Your Photos
Once you take a photo, you like to share it with family and friends - this has become
very easy now. Uploading them on the web or sending by emails is just normal.
Today you have many exciting choices to make and send personalized items with
photos.
Calendars, Greeting cards, photo books- like baby or marriage books, Posters,
Banners, Flyers, Brochures, all can be printed at home.
If the printer has the capability , with transfer papers and hot irons, you can print on
fabrics to make Tshirts, Bags, Aprons, Pillow cases or anything that catches your
fancy.
Then there are professional services which can do all this for you and more. Printing
on ceramic and china – mugs, plates, tiles, making Jewellery Items, key chains,
Playing cards, Compact mirrors, magnets and many more things can be produced
using your pictures. I have given some addresses at the end. You may also Google
and find more.

What You Need: 1.Equipment
COMPUTER- All the new ones have built in graphic card and multimedia
capabilities which are needed for any graphic activity.
SAVING DEVICES – Some other than your hard disk. CDs, DVDs, External
Hard Drives, Pen drives, Online sites are all useful. This is for backup in case your
computer crashes, you will lose everything .
A PRINTER is not essential, but necessary to have full advantage of photos. Most
of your projects you can send and share online. But to get a hard copy, it is better to
have a printer.
Though laser printers are getting popular, an inkjet printer is cheaper and quite good.
The prices of printers have come down. Many printers are multi purpose. They also
work as scanner, Photo copier, and Fax machine.
With scanner and photo copier, you can digitize your old photographs and use online.
With a printer the recurring cost will be of paper and cartridges. The life span of the
cartridge depends on your usage. Usually it is indicated how many papers it can print.
A black/ white cartridge can be Rs.800 onwards, and a color cartridge will be from
Rs. 1200 onward depending on your make. Do not go for cheaper spurious makes as
they can damage your printer which will prove more costly.
PAPERS - Different types are needed for different projects. There are hundreds of
papers for different jobs.
7 of 53.
If your printer allows
Iron on transfer paper for many fabric based projects. This paper is different for
white and colored fabrics, and for inkjet and laser machines.
If the printer has this capability, you don’t need anything more. Print the photo on the
paper and transfer it on the fabric by ironing. The colors are generally fast.

What You Need:2 Software
SOFTWARE – All kinds are needed: Operating Systems, Browsers, Downlaoders,
Photo editors and manipulators.
Internet Connection - All these projects are software based – meaning you will
need to download and install a program before you can use it. So you need an Internet
Connection.
Browser - To be able to see the content on the Internet, you need a good Browser.
Internet Explorer is the most used, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome are
other choices.
Download Manager - Some of the programs are quite big files and may require
many hours on a slow connection. Therefore, you need a good Download Manager.
Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) is very good. This is free, fast and powerful. It is
fully integrated with the Internet Explorer and Firefox. Meaning, when you want to
download from either of these browsers, the download will be done automatically by
this. You can pause a download and start again later. Download it from here:

How To Use The Programs
1.Download - Please download the program from the URL given. I have tried to
find as many free programs as I could. However, some are shareware that you can try
free before buying. They usually have limitations. I have indicated where it is so.
3.Install -All the programs have some installation or set up file. Once you click on
it, the installation is pretty automatic. However, keep an eye as to where the program
is installing, and any other information it asks. This program will typically ask to
install it on your C: Drive, and give you an option to choose another place . You
choose as you go along.
4.Get familiar - Once the program is installed , take time to look around. Try all
the buttons and get familiar with the commands. Remember that help is always
available if you are stuck.
5.Help and add-ons - All programs have good help files , both on and off line,
and many have text and video tutorials. Many help files can be downloaded from the
site. Many programs have additional templates that can be downloaded from their
site. This you can access from within the program.
Note:
New programs and new versions get introduced every day. These programs and
versions are the latest as on July 2009.
Almost all the URLs given are from Cnet.com . I find it is one of the best sites for
library of programs and security.
None of the compiled programs have tested positive for any virus as on May 2009.

Get The Photo Right
Find all your pictures on the computer. Just a little more work and then you can have
all the fun playing with the photos.
1. Sort - Find and sort your images. Sort them by categories so they are easy to find,
and delete the bad ones.
2. Copy - Always make a copy of your photo before you start any alteration. Then, if
something goes wrong, you still have your original. It is better to have a separate
folder with copies to play around with effects.
Many excellent packages are available to help you for every and any bit of work with
photos.
First get an organizer to help you import, export, transfer, find, sort, view, edit, date,
copy, label, print, and share images. You can edit photos to change size, format –
Jpeg, Png, Bmp etc. Make albums, slide shows, collages with all your photo
collection. Send by emails, or to photo phones, or on web albums.

Black and White Soft Focus Sepia
These effects on the original were done in Picasa. The original was cropped and then
applied the effects.
4. Have Fun - Once you have good photos, have fun with them. Download and
install the appropriate software to play.
Mix two or more photos to make a third, mix many to make a collage or mosaic. All
these make wonderful personal gifts.
Make personalized greeting cards, calendars, banners, posters, flyers, arrange them in
a sequence for your own slide show. Share on the net. Burn a CD or DVD to
commemorate special occasions.
Make unique digital albums by Scrapbooking- where you add different settings, text
balloons, other clipart or cartoon to describe your photo.
Many free templates are available to help you with these, where all you have to do is
to put your photo in the designated place.
Print labels for Gift wine bottles! Personal tags for luggage. A jigsaw puzzle out of a
collage . Present to invalids to entertain and identify the people. I am sure you will
come out with many novel ideas !

Software Listed Here
I have listed the programs and given little info about them. Please look at the full
info at the specified page. I have added some photos either from the product page
or, from my photos to show what can be done.
Many programs do the same thing. You will have to try them and find which is
suitable to you.
Many programs have multiple capabilities and pan across several headings.
There are two kinds of Image editing and manipulating programs. You will need
at least one organizer for all the basic editing.
I have tried Picasa , Irfan view and Adobe and they are all good. For just basic
editing they are enough.
To edit in detail and work extensively with your images, a dedicated Image editor
like Photoshop , Corel Photo Paint, Gimp or Paint.net is required, (last two are
free), and you will also need some training to operate them. They can really
enhance a picture and are needed for serious photographers.
There is a lot of help and support available on the net for beginner, hobbyist and
professional levels. All these software have online free tutorials, so it is not very
hard for an enthusiast.
13 of 53.
1. Organizers and Viewers
These will do basic editing as well as organize your photos in albums or folders.
Most of them have capability of organizing photos in slide shows and to make
screen savers. You can also have multimedia capability by adding sounds and
music. These can also be made to run automatically.
With all these you can crop, rotate, adjust exposure, change brightness and hue,
straighten, organize, email and print. Individual programs may have different
capabilities.
Using Photozig Albums, you can easily transfer pictures from your camera, create
photo albums, organize them in any way you want, search with tags/keywords, and
share with your family and friends all in one program.

11. Printing Photos on Fabric Items
If your Printer is capable, which today most Inkjets are, you can print
T-shirts and other fabric items at home.
You do not actually put the fabric in the printer. The actual printing is
done on special Iron on transfer papers. Once the printing is done,
let the paper dry, and then Iron on the fabric. The pattern will be
transferred to the fabric. The colors are reasonably fast.
There are kits available in the west, and there also services which will
do it for you for a fee. But it is as easy to get your own supplies and
Do It Yourself.
3. Transfer Paper
These are special papers. They are different for printing on white or
dark color fabrics. They are also different for Inkjets and Laser
printers.

6. Hard surface to iron
How to do it
1. Prepare
Keep your article ready by washing, drying and ironing.

5.Load the paper
Read the instructions. It has a non-printing side. Load it so it gets
printed on the right side. If you are not sure how to load correctly, first
load a plain paper to see which side is printed.
6. Do a test run
First, print a small design and test in on a scrap of similar fabric.
7. Final printing
When you are satisfied, load another paper, set the print quality
settings to Best. Print. When the printing is done, leave the paper in
the tray until completely dried to avoid smears.
8. Trimming
When it is completely dry, trim the image by cutting excess blank
areas around. But leave a small margin around, to be able to grip the
paper for peeling off.
10. Iron
Only use very hot dry iron. It takes a lot of heat to transfer the image
uniformly and finally to the fabric. Be careful that the paper doesn’t
move from the position. Or the print will be blurred.

Beware
The transfer paper of different brands behave differently. Read the
accompanying guide for complete instructions.
Heed their advice about washing the article. Some ask the article to be
washed to set the color; others allow you to use it straight away.

In India
I have only been able to locate one company in India, which seems to
specialize in such gifts. I have not used them myself, but they have a
good selection online, and the prices also seem reasonable.
