1. Introduction
Overclosures can occur on design purpose to model an interference fit
between two objects or they can be the accidental result of either poor CAD
modelling or rough discretizaton. In this case, it is advisable that these
overclosures would be removed to more accurately model the system and assure
a faster convergence rate.

General contact and contact pairs methods approach overclosures in two

different ways:

- General contact automatically treats all overclosures with strain-free

adjustments in the initial step. It is possible to request that general contact will
treat overclosures as interferences fits.
- On the other hand, contact pairs approach by default treats overclosures as
interference fits by resolving the whole interference at the first increment. It is still
possible to request a strain-free adjustment.

In this example, the assembly of two cylinders is modelled with 2D plain strain
elements and characterized by an uneven overclosure. Due to symmetry, only a
quarter of the assembly is modelled.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to treat overclosures with a contact pair
approach. Two simulations will be carried out: one treating the overclosure as
interference fit, the other using a strain-free adjustment.

2. Preliminaries
- Double click on the file Contact4.cae, this will open an Abaqus database where
you will already find a model called Model-INT including the geometric parts, the
instance positioning in the assembly, the steps and the materials definition.
- The model (Figure 1) is shown in Figure 1 and exploits its symmetry to reduce
the cost of the analysis. It is possible to notice the initial overclosure.

3. Material properties and analyses steps
- Look at the materials definition. Two elastic materials, Aluminium and Polymer
have been defined. Two generalized plain strain sections have been created
aswell and have been assigned to the external (Aluminium) and internal cylinders
(Polymer).

ALUMINIUM

POLYMER

- Look at the Steps definition by exploding the Steps container in the model tree.
Two Static, General steps have been defined and called Overclosure and
Pressurization. In the first step, the overclosure among the cylinders will be
solved with either interference fit or strain-free adjustments. In the second step, a
uniform internal pressure will be applied to the polymeric cylinder.

4. Create the assembly and mesh the parts

- Explode the Assembly container in the model tree, double-click on Instances.
Select both external and internal tubes (keep CTRL pressed to select them
together) and click OK. Two new instances have been added in the model. Notice
the overclosure among the tubes.

- Enter the Mesh module and select Part as Object.

- Mesh the internal_tube.

1. Click on Seed Part Icon and enter 0.039 as size.
2. Click on Assign element type Icon and select Plain strain.
3. Click on Mesh Part Icon and click Yes.

- Repeat the same steps for the external_tube part using 0.055 as global size.

5. Define boundary and loading conditions
Two boundary conditions and a load are applied to this model.

- Define a Symmetric displacement condition in the X direction. Double click on

BCs in the model tree, call the boundary condition as BC-SYMM-X, select Initial
as step and Symmetry/Antisymmetry/Encastre as type. Select the face
highlighted in the following Figure as region and then X-SYMM as type.

- Repeat the same to create a BC-SYMM-Y boundary condition in the face of the
beam shown below.

- Create now a new Load condition called Pressure. Double-Click on Loads in

the model tree. Select Pressurization as step and Pressure as type. Select the
internal edge of the polymeric tube as region and enter 1 as magnitude. Click OK.

- Save the model. File  Save.

6. Treat Overclosure as interference fit
- Create new Interaction Property by double-clicking Interaction Properties in
the model tree, call it IntProp-1 and select Contact as Type. Select Hard contact
for Mechanical Normal Behaviour. Click OK.

- Create now a new Surface-to-Surface interaction. Double click on Interactions,

select Overclosure as Step, call the new interaction as INT-TUBES and choose
Surface-to-Surface as type. Select the internal edge of the external cylinder as
master surface and the external edge of the internal cylinder as slave surface.
Select IntProp-1 as global interaction property. Notice that No adjustment has
been selected in the Slave/Adjustment typem thus the overclosure is solved as
an interference fit. Click on Interference fit button and select ‘Gradually remove
slave node overclosure during the step’ to allow a smoother solution of the
overclosure (less convergence problems). Click OK.

7. Create and Submit a Job
- Double-click Jobs in the model tree and create a new Job called Contact4-INT-
FIT. Select the Model-INT and click Continue and then ok. Now, right-click on
Jobs and open the Job-Manager. Highlight the job Contact4-INT previously
created and click on Submit to start your analysis and on Monitor to monitor the
advancement of the analysis. Once it is terminated click on Results.

8. View the Results

- Visualize the complete model. In the main menu bar, click on View  Odb
Display options and enter the Mirror/Pattern tab. Tick the XZ and YZ mirror
planes to mirror the model and exploit the symmetry of the system. Click OK.

- Visualize the displacement and the stress contour plots. Animate the analysis
using the tools highlighted in the following picture. Notice the non uniform stress
state.

- Look at the solution of the overclosure by compring the configuration at the

beginning of the analysis and at the end of the first step.

9. Treat Overclosure with strain-free adjustments
- Copy the Model-INT by right-clicking on Model-INT in the model tree and
selecting Copy Model. Rename the new model as Model-ADJUST.

- Double-Click on the interaction INT-TUBES just created and select ‘Adjust only
to remove overclosure’. This option calculates the overclosure and moves the
slave nodes

- Double-click Jobs in the model tree and create a new Job called Contact4-
ADJUST. Select the Model-ADJUST and click Continue and then ok. Now, right-
click on Jobs and open the Job-Manager. Highlight the job Contact4-ADJUST
previously created and click on Submit to start your analysis and on Monitor to
monitor the advancement of the analysis. Once it is terminated click on Results.

- View the results. In particular, notice the now uniform stress state at the end
of the pressurization test. Also, plot the STAINFREE variable at the intial step.
Click on the ‘Plot symbols on deformed shape’ Icon to visulize the vector
resultant of the strain free adjustments.
