PRODUCTION WITH HANDLING UNITS

The SAP ERP system sees a handling unit as a physical unit that consists of the packaging materials (load carrier /
packaging material) and its goods. A handling unit is a combination of materials and packaging materials. All the
information contained in the material items, such as batches and serial numbers, is available by way of the
handling units.

Business Process:

Packaging materials are used to enclose or hold together the packaged goods. You can pack the packaged
goods into or onto the packaging material. The packaging material can be a load carrier. The most important
packaging materials are, for example, crates, boxes, containers, wire baskets, and pallets.

Therefore, the system should propose the alternative packing material w.r.t the order quantity.
Example:
For order quantity 100 nos, if we give a packing instruction that the capacity of 1 carton is to pack only 25 nos
then system should propose 100/25= 4 cartons. That means 25 nos in each carton.
And each carton is assigned with HU to track information like status, document referenced, movement history as
well as HU further levels.

Prerequisites:
1. Material master maintenance.
 Maintain material group and material type in Basic data and sales general view for packing and header
materials.
2. Customization.
Configuration:

Path:- Logistics - General --> Handling unit management -->Basic data --> Define packaging
material type.

create a packing material type by clicking on New entries button as shown below.
Path:- Logistics - General --> Handling unit management -->basic data --> Define Material group
for packaging materials.

Now define material Group fro packaging materials.

Click on new entries button and create a material group.


Path:- Logistics - General --> Handling unit management -->Basic data --> Define allowed
packaging materials.

Now assign packing material type and material group.

As you can see material group and packing material type which was created on above steps as assigned
here.
Path:- Logistics - General --> Handling unit management --> Automatic packing -->
Determination type of packing instruction --> Define Determination type for packing instruction.

Now have create determination rule to the packing instructions for material and plant combination.

Over here determine condition type.

Define Procedure for packing instruction determination with condition type create above.
Path:- Logistics - General --> Handling unit management --> Automatic packing -->
Determination type of packing instruction --> Define Procedure for packing instruction
determination.

Click on New entries button and create procedure.

And select line item and click on control option.


And again click on New entries button and assign condition type.

Path:- Logistics - General --> Handling unit management --> Automatic packing --> Maintain
packing transaction profile.

Now maintain packing Transaction profile.

Now select already created packing profile and assign the above created determination procedure for
packing instruction.
As you can see the procedure for packing instruction is assigned here.
Material Master Maintenance

For the material type VERP i.e., packing material assign material group which was created above

And now in sales general view assign material group and material type both.
Similarly for the header which need to be pack assign the material group in Basic data 1 view.

Now in sales general view assign material group and material type both.
Now create a production order for the header material.

Transactions:

Now go to T-code: POP1 to give packing instruction for packing the batch.

Now enter packing material in item category “P” and now enter header material and select item category
as “M”.
Item category:
P:- Packing material.
M:- Material.
Over here you can additional data for the packing material in dimension tab like height, width and length.

Now save the packing instruction and system will generate unique code.
Determination of Packing Instruction:

T-code: POF1

Now select the condition type which was create on above steps.

Determination of packing instruction is used to assign material with packing instruction. Multiple packing
instruction can be assigned to a material.
As production order is already created with no: 10011810, now it’s time to pack the order.\

T-code: COP1

Enter order no and press enter button, system will propose the packing the material needed w.r.t the
order quantity as we have already instructed in POP1.

Over here enter batch and you can see for packing material system as proposed 4 no of packing material
for 100 nos quantity.

Now save the transaction and system will generate a handling unit no. for each 4 cartons.
As we have not confirmed the production order and we will do GR in COWBHUWE T-code.
Goods receipt for the order:

T-code: COWBHUWE

Over here enter production order no and click on propose HU button, system will display the handling unit
no., batch etc.

Now save the transaction and system will do GR.

Now you can see stock has been posted in Stock overview.
Now right click on respective batch and select handling unit option.

System will show the below given information of handling unit no, batch, quantity and date of manufacture
etc.
