The Problem

The Macaiban Bridge serves as an alternate route to the community. This bridge

connects two baranggays which are Poblacion and Tumana. It gave the commuters an

advantage in terms of saving time and money by taking this bridge instead of the national road

which is often compromise by the traffic. The main problem of this study is that this bridge
cannot serve its own purpose when it overflows.Though this bridge was intentionally

constructed in a way allowing the overflowing of the river making it not accessible, the

researchers stand by their vision that a bridge should not be deprive of its function to serve

as a connecting medium between two distant lands separated by a water body. Besides, it is

somehow ironic that the bridge is inaccessible due to the river flowing over it whereas, in the

first place, it is constructed to over-pass the river.

Further the study tends to find out the most economical solution to develop the Santa

Maria River and this bridge along Macaiban Stretch for the welfare of the community.

Research Methodology

The researchers used survey questionnaire to obtain the preliminary information to start

the research process. Two sets of survey questionnaires was provided to assess the prevailing

conditions of the bridge and the nearby flood plain whenever the flood water level rises – one for

the motorists and pedestrians and another for the nearby residents and farmers. This initial

information is required to have an insight on the perspective of the main affected citizens

regarding the development of the river and to determine what factors are to be given importance

through the research process. Then the researchers gathered the input data which includes the

RDIF Data, DEM and Santa Maria river profile and the hydrologic and hydraulic model created

by the HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS software respectively. After gathering all the necessary data

the researcher then evaluate the effectivity and feasibility of each scenario through simulation

and cost analysis. Finally, the researchers have evaluated the scenarios and came up with the

most effective, feasible and economical solution. The researcher made up the structural design

of the bridge as well as the necessary river bank improvement. The cost estimates of the

following solution is then quantified and specified by the researchers.
