HW 6: Intuitive Calculus Homework –3.

1. For the below graph, specify the intervals on which the derivative of the given function
is positive and those on which it is negative.

Be sure to show work for the following problems---using the derivative and a sign chart.

For each of the following functions,

a. Find the intervals on which f is increasing and decreasing.

b. Find the relative min and max (points) of f.

f ( x) = 3x 4 − 8 x3 + 6 x 2 + 2

3. f ( x)= x + x

4. f ( x ) =
x −1

5. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 3𝑥𝑥 5 − 5𝑥𝑥 3 + 4

6. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = (𝑥𝑥 2 − 16)4 .

7. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) =
𝑥𝑥−7

8. Suppose we are given the derivative function f ' ( x) = x( x − 2) 2 ( x + 4) . Determine the

critical numbers of f(x) and classify each as a relative minimum, relative maximum, or
neither. (You only need to give x-values here) Show some work.
9. Below is the sign chart Alex created for a given function f(x). Assuming he is correct,
then determine the following for f(x):
a. Find the intervals on which f is increasing and decreasing.

b. Find the x-values where f has relative extrema.
