Hell

I. There is a Hell a place of eternal damnation. No one has to go there

a. We live in a world that was not made by us we have a responsibility to seek God and
learn His ways or rules.
b. Matthew 13:37-42 (NKJV)37 He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good
seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the
kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. 39 The enemy who sowed them
is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40
Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this
age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom
all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the
furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
c. There is a notion that exists today that if there is a heaven everyone will go there. Just
do your best and everything will be ok.
d. This is why what we believe is important. It gives us a sense of urgency. If there was no
Hell or consequences then it wouldn’t matter what people believed.
e. If there was no life after this one.
f. 1 Corinthians 15:32 If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what
advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we
die!”
g. Jude 1:22-23 (NKJV) 22 And on some have compassion, making a distinction; 23 but
others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by
the flesh.
h. Paul did not ignore the reality of Hell
i. Acts 24:25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to
come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time
I will call for you.”
j. The existence of the prison system shouldn’t scare you if you are a law abiding citizen
but you should know about it.
k. Luke 16:19 (NKJV)
i. The Rich Man and Lazarus
ii. 19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and
fared sumptuously every day.
iii. NSFLSB Hades: One of two compartments of the underworld, equivalent to OT
“Sheol” and often a synonym for “death.” Though characterized by many of the
same dynamics as “hell” (see note on 5:29, 30), Hades is the temporary place for
deceased unbelievers, until the final judgment. Hades will give up its dead at the
final judgment, after which Hades (death) itself will join its occupants in hell (see
Rev. 20:14, 15).
iv. (ESV SB Notes) But the rich man went to Hades (the place of the wicked, the
dead, or “hell”), a place of torment.
l. Revelation 20:13-14 (NKJV) 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and
Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one
according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is
the second death.
m. (NSFLBnote) The last enemy” to be destroyed is Death and Hades, the temporary abode
of the dead until the Final Judgment. They are ultimately as powerless as the other
forces of evil.
n. Jude 1:7 (NKJV) as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar
manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after
strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
o. I don’t spend my life getting up everyday hoping I don’t go to jail. I know about jail but
it’s not going to happen to me.
p. Learning about the prison system is good. It’s part of our understanding of society, it
doesn’t mean you’re going to prison. It’s not information designed to condemn or
threaten or frighten. If you are a law abiding citizen you have nothing to fear.
q. Psalms 9:17 (NKJV) The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget
God.

II. Hell was created for the Devil and his angels
a. Matthew 25:41 (NKJV) “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me,
you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
b. Isaiah 14:9 Hell from beneath is excited about you, To meet you at your coming; It stirs
up the dead for you, All the chief ones of the earth; It has raised up from their thrones
All the kings of the nations.
c. (NSFLBnote) Gehenna It was most likely symbolic of the fires and judgments of eternal
punishment (see note on 5:29, 30).
d. People go to Hell every day
e. Psalms 88:4-5 I am counted with those who go down to the pit; I am like a man who has
no strength, Adrift among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You
remember no more, And who are cut off from Your hand.

III. We should avoid Hell at all cost

a. Nothing in this life is worth going to Hell.
b. People buy fire insurance for something that probably will never happen and yet don’t
make the least bit of preparation for something that will Death and an eternity
hereafter. 1 in 3000 chance your house will burn down.
c. Matthew 5:29-30 (NKJV) 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it
from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for
your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it
off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members
perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
i. (NSFLBnote) 5:29, 30 Hell: The Bible teaches there are two compartments to the
underworld—Hell and Hades/Sheol (see note on 11:23). Hell is also known as
“Gehenna” (see text and center-column note on 5:22) and “the lake of fire”
(Rev. 20:10). Hell is the place of eternal, conscious punishment for the Devil and
those who die without receiving Christ. It is characterized by despair and
anguish (Matt. 25:30) and an awareness of the total absence of God (Ps. 88:3–
5). No one is banished to hell until the time of the final judgment
d. Mark 9:43 (NKJV) 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to
enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that
shall never be quenched—
e. Matthew 18:8 (NKJV) “If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from
you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands
or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire.
f. We should avoid it at all cost. Nothing is more important than avoiding Hell. Your body
parts, friends, sins, nothing.

IV. The final abode of the wicked

a. Revelation 14:9-10 (NKJV) 9 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice,
“If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or
on his hand, 10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is
poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire
and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
b. God has provided the answer. People can choose whether they want to accept it or not.
It’s all about choices.
c. Revelation 19:19-20 (NKJV) 19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their
armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against
His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked
signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast
and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire
burning with brimstone.
d. Millennium
e. The bottomless pit, literally “the shaft of the abyss,” is the reservoir of evil, which acts as
a prison for demons (see 9:11; 11:7; 17:8)
f. Revelation 20:10 (NKJV) The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and
brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day
and night forever and ever.
g. How can a loving God allow people to go to hell? How can a loving God allow people to
suffer and die? Sin.
h. God does not force people into Heaven.
i. People cannot be allowed to do whatever they want in society with no consequences. If
they choose to break the law they will be confined.
j. Revelation 20:11 (NKJV)
i. The Great White Throne Judgment
ii. 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the
earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.
k. Revelation 20:13-14 (NKJV) 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and
Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one
according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is
the second death.
l. (NSFLBnote) The last enemy” to be destroyed is Death and Hades, the temporary abode
of the dead until the Final Judgment. They are ultimately as powerless as the other
forces of evil.
m. Revelation 20:15 (NKJV) And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into
the lake of fire.
n. God will do what is right. We see through a glass darkly. We will understand and we will
agree that God did the right thing. He is the perfect combination of mercy and justice of
compassion and righteousness.
o. Rev 21 the new creation. God will not allow sin and sinfulness to defile His new creation
like it did the old one.
p. Revelation 21:1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the
first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.
q. Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually
immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns
with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
r. (Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary) Thus “Sheol” is also a place of reward for the
righteous (Hos. 13:14; cf. 1 Cor. 15:55). Jesus’ teaching in Luke 16:19-31 seems to reflect
accurately the Old Testament concept of she‘ol; it is a place of conscious existence after
death, one side of which is occupied by the suffering, unrighteous dead separated by a
great chasm from the other side peopled by the righteous dead enjoying their reward
Heaven
I. A Description of Heaven
a. John 14:1-4 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In
My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to
prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and
receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you
know, and the way you know.”
b. Revelation 21:10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and
showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
c. Revelation 4:1
d. The Throne Room of Heaven
i. Isaiah 6:1–3 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in
heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me,
saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after
this.”
e. Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the
heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,
f. Hebrews 13:14-15 For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit
of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
g. The Heavenly Hope
h. Hebrews 11:13-16 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having
seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were
strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that
they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they
had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better,
that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He
has prepared a city for them.
i. 1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed
what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we
shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as
He is purified.
j. Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin
abounded, grace abounded much more,

II. The Down Payment

a. It seems sin continues to outdo grace. There is more bad news all the time. It can be
overwhelming.
b. The Bad news doesn't last forever, if you're a Christian, the good news does.
c. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us
is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee
i. (Strongs: down payment) (Amp: security deposit)
d. 2 Corinthians 5:5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has
given us the Spirit as a guarantee. (down payment)
e. The down payment has changed the world.
f. The down payment has saved us from sin, turned sinners into saints.
g. Delivered us from the power of the enemy.
h. Filled us with the Holy Spirit.
i. Healed our bodies, filled us with power, breaks the chains of addiction. Fills us with joy
unspeakable.
j. Sin has been on full display for over 6000 years, we've only seen a small portion of what
God has already paid for.
k. Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel
of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of
promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased
possession, to the praise of His glory.
l. 1 Corinthians 2:7-9 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom
which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age
knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is
written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man, The
things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

III. New Bodies

a. Romans 8:22-23 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth
pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the first fruits of the
Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the
redemption of our body.
b. 1 Corinthians 15:50-53 (NKJV) 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell
you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in
the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead
will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on
incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
c. 2 Cor 5:1
d. Philippians 3:20-21 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for
the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be
conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to
subdue all things to Himself.
e. Jesus’ Resurrected body Revelation 1:12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with
me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands,

b. Hebrews 1:10-12 And: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And
the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You remain; And they will
all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed.
But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.”
