DEFINITIONS AND BASIC CONCEPTS OF HOUSING

TERMINOLOGY
o HOUSE: A physical structure used exclusively for residential
purposes.

o *In order to call a physical structure a house it should be pucca or


semi – pucca and have a kitchen and a toilet.

o Significance of a house depends upon the economic, social,


cultural and physical significance.

o House is the major source


of economic security.

o A house narrates the social


and cultural position in the
society.
WHY THERE IS A NEED TO STUDY HOUSING
 House or a home is a basic need for human being.
As shown in the
image, there are
certain cities with
housing conditions
like this:

 People living in
inferior
conditions.

 They lack the:


• basic health facilities,
• basic structural facilities to withstand the natural disasters
• basic infrastructure
As shown in the image, there are certain large cities with:

 Multi storied real estate development with congested and compact cities

 At the same time these cities do not have enough infrastructure.

 It is seen there is major mismatch between the SUPPLY AND DEMAND.


There are some social problems that are associated with housing:

o As shown in the figure above, there is a corridor but it is used for


some other day to day activities which are not supposed to be
done.
Problem related to technicalities and legality of the building
construction in housing:
o As shown in the figure above, there is an ongoing construction but
during the construction the whole building collapsed due to which
many people died.
