Starting date of the activity: Deadline of the activity:

Competence to develop:
The student identifies the propagation and polarization mods in
electromagnetic waves, looking for the suitable mod, according to the
analyzed application and the student understands the waves behavior
in different transmission mediums used in telecommunications.

Topics to develop:
- Propagation modes of Electromagnetic waves.
- Polarization modes.
- Incidence on a normal plane.

Steps, phases of the learning strategy to develop

Step 3 – To understand the waves behavior in open and enclosure
mediums
The group will have to follow the next steps to accomplish the activity
goals.

Step 1: Make an academic research about the topics defined for this
unit.

Step 2: Answer the given questions using academic resources.

Step 3: Each member of the group has to select and solve one
problem.

Step 4: Solve the practical exercises in group, taking into account that
it is necessary to explain each value and step.

Step 5: Compile the group contributions from the collaborative forum

and ensure the accomplish of the rubric items.

Step 6: Deliver the work in the monitoring and evaluation

environment.

Activities to develop

Each student in the group has to answer the following

questions using academic references to support the research:

1. Determine 3 advantages and 2 disadvantages presented by

natural phenomena of refraction or reflection for the
transmission of electromagnetic waves.

2. Explain what Snell's Law is for in the propagation of

electromagnetic waves.

3. How is the total reflection of an electromagnetic wave achieved

by colliding with a different medium of propagation?

4. How is the total refraction of an electromagnetic wave achieved

by colliding with a different means of propagation?
5. What do you mean by polarization of electromagnetic waves?

Choose one of the following problems, taken from “Cutnell, J.

D., & Johnson, K. W. (2009), John Wiley & Sons Ltd., New York
& Paz, A. (2013)” solve it and share the solution in the forum.
Perform a critical analysis on the group members’
contributions and reply this in the forum.

1. When red light in vacuum is incident at the Brewster angle on a

certain glass slab, the angle of refraction is 28 ° . What are (a) the
index of refraction of the glass and (b) the Brewster angle?

2. In the following figure n1 =1.9 , n1 =1. 4, and n3 =1.1, light refracts

from material 1 into material 2. If it is incident at point A at the
critical angle for the interface between materials 2 and 3, what
are (a) the angle of refraction at point B and (b) the initial angle
θ ? If, instead, light is incident at B at the critical angle for the
interface between materials 2 and 3, what are (c) the angle of
refraction at point A and (d) the initial angle θ

3. A laser that is inside a tank of water, shoots a ray of light

upwards. If the laser is located h1=20cm under water. At what
minimum horizontal distance d1 from the laser pointer should
you shoot so that the beam does not leave the water?

4. In the following figure a 3m long vertical pole extends from the

bottom of a swimming pool to a point 50cm above the water.
Sunlight is incident at angle θ=6 0o . What is the length of the
shadow of the pole on the level bottom of the pool?

5. In the following figure, light from ray A refracts from material 1 (

n1 =1.8 ) into a thin layer of material 2 ( n2 =1.5), crosses that layer,
and is then incident at the critical angle on the interface between
materials 2 and 3 (n3 =1.2). (a) What is the value of incident
angle θ A ? (b) If θ A is decreased, does part of the light refract into
material 3?
Light from ray B refracts from material 1 into the thin layer,
crosses that layer, and is then incident at the critical angle on
the interface between materials 2 and 3. (c) What is the value of
incident angle θ B? (d) If θ B is decreased, does part of the light
refract into material 3?

In group solve the following practical exercise

a. Design an Excel workbook that using the Snell law and giving an
incident angle for four different precious materials; return the
angle of refraction and let us to know if it is genuine.

Environment Collaborative learning environment: In this

environment, there is a forum where the student is
going to share information with his/her fellow
classmates in order to understand the conceptual
bases in Electrodynamic and waves and to solve
the proposed problems.
for the Monitoring and evaluation environment: In this
development environment, the student will have to deliver the
collaborative activity, according to the course
agenda.
Practical learning environment: In this
environment, the student will find information to
develop the proposed practical activities.
Individual:
The student will have to answer the conceptual
questions using academic sources, to solve a
chosen problem and to make a review in the forum
about the delivered problems.

Collaborative:
The collaborative group will have to choose the
best analyses about the given concepts and to
consolidate each part of the proposed activity,
Products to including the practical exercises, where everyone
deliver by has to participate.
student
The deliver document should contain the following:
- Cover page (It contains the title, authors’
name, course, university and date)
- Introduction (The group will explain the
practical application associate to the unit
topics)
- Developed activity (according to the activity
guidelines)
- Conclusions
