Daily Lesson Plan (Template)

Name: Laken Cyrus Date: March 16, 2020

Subject: Math Topic: 2D Shapes

Grade: 2nd Grade Length of Lesson: 1 hour

The Big Idea: What are 2D shapes? How many sides and vertices do they have?
Domain: Geometry

Cluster: Reason with Shapes and Their Attributes

Standard: M.2.24 -Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given
number of angles or a given number of equal faces (sizes are compared directly or visually, not
compared by measuring). Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Specific Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of the standard by completing a

worksheet of the properties of 2D shapes with 90% accuracy, as measured by informal
assessment of the worksheet and Taco Shape Activity.

Introduction: The teacher will begin the lesson by asking the students what are some of the 2D shapes that
they know. The teacher will ask the students about how many sides a circle and square have. The teacher will
ask the students what vertices are.

Method(s):
 Group worksheet
 Lecture
 Discussion

Materials/Equipment/Technology/Community Resources:
 Copies for the students of worksheet
 Shape information copies
 Copies of Taco
 Taco Shape toppings for Students
 Overhead and Smartboard
 Glue

Depth of Knowledge:
Level 1: Recall the names of the shapes
Level 2: Infer the number of sides each shape has

1
Level 3: Formulation the number of vertices
Level 4: Connect shapes to real life

Direct Instruction/Warm-Up Activity/Presentation/Model Lesson/Make Connections:

The teacher will begin the lesson by reviewing 2D shapes with the students. The teacher will have the shapes
and shape properties posted on the board for the students to see and to refer to. The teacher will discuss the
sides and vertices each shape has. The teacher will teach and review the following shapes with the students and
how many sides and vertices each shape has: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid, pentagon,
hexagon, heptagon, and octagon.
Guided Practice:
The teacher will give the students the worksheet to do about the shapes and their properties. The teacher will
work orally with the students on the worksheet and allow the students to use the resources on the board. For
example, the teacher will have the students work on the first shape. The students will write the name of the
shape, the number of sides, and number of vertices. The students will circle whether the sides are curved or
straight. After allowing the students a few minutes to work on the shape. The teacher will go over the shape.
The teacher will ask the students what the first shape is. The students would answer circle. The teacher will ask
how many sides a circle has and so forth while the students answer orally. The teacher will write the correct
answers on the paper under the zoom camera for the students to see and correct their answers if needed.

Independent Practice:
The students will make tacos using shapes. For example, the triangle represents tomatoes, lettuce are
represented by rhombus, and so on. The students will tell how many of each topping their tacos have. The
teacher will tell the students that they will be making tacos. The teacher will write what each shape represents
on the board, such as the red triangles = tomatoes. The teacher will challenge the students to figure out how
many sides their tacos have. For example, if a student uses 10 squares for meat, 3 triangles for tomatoes, and 4
rectangles for lettuce, the student will need to tell that their taco has 65 sides. The teacher will have the shapes
pre-cut for the students to use.

Differentiation:(You need to address in your differentiation of the lesson how you will meet the needs of
the 3 Tiers. Be sure you are specific)

Tier 1 Learners: The teacher will review and answer the student’s questions.
Tier 2 Learners: The teacher will provide time for the students to complete their paper and refer to the
smartboard for corrections.
Tier 3 Learners: The teacher will walk around the room and assist students with their Tacos as needed.

Evaluation/Assessment: The teacher will informally assess the students through their answers that they give
orally on the worksheet. The teacher will informally assess the students through their tacos that they made by
having the students turn in their paper and tacos. The teacher will formally assess the students with a test at a
later time.

Wrap-Up (Lesson Closure) / Concluding Activity: The teacher will have the students clean their area and
throw away the trash. The teacher will have the students turn in their tacos.
