Curve system was used in the 8¾-in. hole
section, which was all vertical/nudge,
and the majority of the curve section.
Initially, the system was deployed in
three wells, where it eliminated sliding
drilling mode to successfully reduce overall
drilling time. This optimized drilling plan
improved the overall average rate of
penetration (ROP) from 45.4 ft/hr with
the conventional BHA, to 56.6 ft/hr with
AutoTrak Curve system deployment.

The significant increase in performance

prompted the operator to transition
additional wells to the AutoTrak Curve
system, and at the end of the 12-month
period, the system was deployed on all but
20 wells. After one year of introducing the
AutoTrak Curve RSS, and having drilled only
64% of the operator’s total wells with this
technology, the average time per well was
reduced by 2.8 days—almost 19%. During
the same period, below rotary table (BRT)
days and on-bottom drilling days were also
reduced by 2.3 and 1.2 days, respectively.
