Hours: 3 Unit duration: 10 días

Specific Objectives:
The student will be able to learn and talk about food and drinks that they like,
also they will be able to write about their favorite festival and the food people
eat to celebrate it.

Skills to Develop:
• Can ask and answer simple questions, initiate and respond to simple
statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.
• Can handle numbers, quantities, costs and time.
• Can ask and answer questions about him/herself and other people,
where they live, people they know, things they have.
• Can follow speech that is very slow and carefully articulated, with long
pauses for him/her to assimilate meaning.
• Can understand and extract essential information from short, recorded
passages dealing with predictable everyday matters which are delivered
slowly and clearly.
• Can understand very short, simple texts a single phrase at a time,
picking up familiar names, words and basic phrases and rereading as
required.
• Can get an idea of the content of simpler informational material and
short, simple descriptions, especially if there is visual support.
• Can write simple, isolated phrases and sentences.
• Can write simple phrases and sentences about themselves or another
person, where they live and what they do.

• Can write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple
connectors like ‘and’ and ‘but’.

Forum Description:

After reading the material, the student will be able to participate in the
discussion forum and:

II. Content

Simple Present
INTRODUCTION
In English one of the most common tenses when expressing is the simple
Present. It is used to express habits, general truths, repeated actions or
unchanging situations, emotions and wishes. It is also used to give instructions
or directions. We can also use the simple present to express fixed
arrangements, present or future, and in the future time, after some
conjunctions. In this lesson you will learn how to use it correctly.

III. Content Development

Simple Present
The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular,
true or normal.

We use the simple present tense:

• for repeated or regular actions in the present time period.

Examples

- I take the train to the office.


- The train to Berlin leaves every hour.
- John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.

• For facts.

Examples

- The President of The USA lives in The White House.


- A dog has four legs.
- We come from Switzerland.

• For habits.

Examples

- I get up early every day.


- Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.
- They travel to their country house every weekend.

• For things that are always / generally true.

Examples

- It rains a lot in winter.


- The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.
- They speak English at work.

Verb Conjugation & Spelling


We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive.

In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.

The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of
that verb:

1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the
third person.
- go – goes
- catch – catches
- wash – washes
- kiss – kisses
- fix – fixes
- buzz – buzzes

2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.

- marry – marries
- study – studies
- carry – carries
- worry – worries

NOTE: For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S.

- play – plays
- enjoy – enjoys
- say – says
- study – studies

NOTE: The verbs have is irregular.

- I/you/we/They have a lot of CD´s.


- He/she/it has a lot of CD´s.

Word Order of Questions with Do and Does


The following is the word order to construct a basic question in English using
Do or Does.

*Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The infinitive
without TO before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To have it is just the have
part.

Remember that the infinitive is the verb before it is conjugated (changed) and it
begins with TO. For example: to have, to eat, to go, to live, to speak etc.

Examples of Questions with Do and Does:

- Do you need a dictionary?


- Does Mary need a dictionary?
- Do we have a meeting now?
- Does it rain a lot in winter?
- Do they want to go to the party?
- Does he like pizza?

Prepositions of Time

Prepositions of time can be challenging for students who have difficulty


recognizing when to use certain words. These little words are so important
when speaking English because the difference between “He’ll go to Italy in
March.” and “He’ll go to Italy at March.

There are several prepositions in English that are used with time in, at, on,
before. Generally, in shows the “largest” time or place, on shows dates and
time, and at usually shows the “smallest” time or place. We use after to say at
a later time, and until to say when to stop doing something.

Let's look at the usage for in, at, on, after, before, until.

• My English class starts at two-thirty.

¨We use until to talk about an event that continues to another event
or specific time ¨

Days of the week and Months of the Year

Background: The true length of a year on Earth is 365.2422 days, or about


365.25 days. The year has 365 days long and leap years are 366 days. A year is
divided in twelve months which are:

January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September,


October, November, December.

A week is divided in seven days which are:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
