Question 1
Counselling is an interaction in a therapeutic setting, focusing primarily on a
conversation about relationships, beliefs, and behaviours (including feelings), through
which the client’s perceived problem is elucidated and framed or reframed in a fitting or
useful way, and in which new solutions are generated and the problem takes on a new
meaning.

Critically discuss the various aspects mentioned in this counselling definition.

Kaunseling merupakan satu proses interaksi dalam suasana teraputik, dengan memberi fokus
kepada perbualan mengenai perhubungan, kepercayaan, dan tingkah laku (termasuk
perasaan), di mana, klien menerima masalah dengan cara terbaik. Penyelesaian baru
dihasilkan dan masalah tersebut akan memberi makna baru kepada diri klien.

Question 2
Alfred Adler proposed a theory on human development that is optimistic, hopeful and
positive. His emphasis was on subjective feelings and social interest. He outlined four
phases of therapy in order to achieve the goal of Adlerian counselling.

Discuss these FOUR phases of Adlerian therapy.

Many people in Malaysia have misconceptions about counselling and the process of
counselling. For some people, counselling is for losers and not for people who are
strong and capable.

What do you think about this statement? Discuss your opinion based on some
misconceptions about counselling in your country.

Ramai penduduk di Malaysia mempunyai fahaman yang salah terhadap kaunseling dan proses
kaunseling. Pada sesetengah orang, kaunseling hanya layak untuk mereka yang gagal dan
bukan untuk orang yang ada kekuatan serta keupayaan.

The counselling process is a planned, structured dialogue between a counsellor and a
client. There is an implicit meaning of a progressive movement towards an ultimate
conclusion. According to Hackney and Cormier (1987), counselling process consists of a
series of steps through which the counsellor and the client move.

Explain the FIVE steps in a counselling process by Hackney and Cormier (1987).

Proses kaunseling adalah sesuatu dialog yang dirancang dan berstruktur di antara kaunselor
dan klien. Terdapat makna yang tersirat dalam pergerakan yang progresif ke arah satu
kesimpulan yang muktamad. Mengikut Hackney and Cormier (1987), proses kaunseling
melibatkan beberapa peringkat di mana kaunselor dan klien bergerak bersama.

The relationship between a counsellor and his or her client is intimate. Counsellor needs
to be really sincere in the relationship. If counsellors hide their values and feelings, then
they will become merely ‘technical experts’ that will result in ‘sterile counselling’. Corey
(2005) lists a few personal characteristics of an effective counsellor.

Discuss your views on Coreys’ personal characteristics of an effective counsellor.

Group counselling is used based on the premise that people have natural tendency to
share thoughts and feelings. Gladding (2000) proposed four stages of group counselling
process that is forming, norming, performing and terminating.

Discuss and evaluate the importance of each stage in the process of group counselling.
