Tips for Improving Your Defensive Driving

Defensive driving involves a set of skills applied by drivers to reduce their risk of having

a crash. Improving the defensive driving skills is important in reducing the errors causing

accidents. Millions of accidents can be reduced by having vital defensive skills. The cost of poor

driving is severe and often leads to injury, death, and loss of property as well as other indirect

costs incurred to treat the injuries. Through defensive driving, one can save time, lives and

money. This article looks into the tips for improving defensive driving.

One of the very basic tips is respecting the right of way for everyone even if one has the

legal right to refuse. Avoid blocking other vehicle’s path by moving in front of it. This will

reduce the chances of causing an accident. Another tip is not exceeding the set speed limit

because it is dangerous and illegal. Choose the right speed to match that of the traffic. Paying

attention on the road is key to avoiding accidents. Stay alert and avoid various distractions such

as picking the phone while driving.

Another tip is to avoid driving while feeling unwell or stress to avoid interfering with the

concentration level. It is also recommended to take rest after driving for a while to relieve

fatigue. Ensuring that one is always wearing a seat belt is important as it can save life. It is also

good to always slow down in bad weather such as fog and heavy rainfall and wet roads. Expect

driving mistakes from other drives so as to avoid them whenever they occur.

Maintenance of the vehicle is necessary for ensuring smooth driving whenever on the

roads. Taking a wide view is another tip that is a helpful tip as it gives the driver space and time

to react to any risk that comes up. While driving, it is always good to identify the various risks
