A. Answer the questions below. Use the examples as models of the grammar and
vocabulary you have to use.

1. Why didn’t you study English before? (List at least 5 reasons in a

composition.)

Example:

One of the reasons why I didn’t study English before it is because I thought it
was too difficult. I didn’t understand my English teacher at school and that
was frustrating.
The main reason I didn't study English before was because I focused on
studying civil engineering and there were no financial resources, so I
didn't study it.

I really wanted to learn English to travel and see the world but my
dreams were frustrated and I started my university career.

Another reason was that when I was in high school, everything had
Spanish instructions, so there was no need to learn English.

I did not study English because I had no contact with foreigners, now I
think people travel a lot to Colombia and it is necessary to learn English.

Before, I didn't study English because I wasn't too good at learning

foreign languages.

2. How different would things be if you had learned English before? (Name and
explain at least 5 things.)

Example:

If I had learned English some years ago I would have accepted a job a
multinational company offered me five years ago. One of the requirements
was to speak English and my level back then was very low.
 If I had learned English a few years ago, I would have joined Cemex Colombia
and perhaps I would have learned a lot in that company. The requirement
was to speak minimum English B1.

 If I had learned English before, I would have applied for a visa to travel and
see the USA. USA or another country where the main language was English

 If I had learned English before, now I would have graduated from university
because I would have passed the Ecades exam with a high level

 If I had learned English earlier, I would be traveling more constantly and

perhaps working as a translator for a private trip agency, giving information
about tourist places in Colombia.

 If I had learned English before, I could watch movies, listen to music and
watch news in that language without a translator

 If I had learned English before, probably I would have my C2 English

certification

B. Record an audio file of yourself answering the following questions. Use the
examples as models of the grammar and vocabulary you have to use.

1. Why are you studying English? (List and explain at least 4 reasons.)

Example:

I’m studying English because I finally decided that if I want to improve my

professional profile becoming bilingual is essential.

I am studying English because I believe that being bilingual brings more

job opportunities and I will be able to work in multinational companies

English is a universal language spoken in many countries of the world

If I learn to speak English I could watch movies, listen to music and watch
news in that language without subtitles

I can travel to other English speaking countries without problems and I

will understand any conversation
2. In what ways are you going to benefit from this learning?

Learning English in such a competitive world at work widened my

opportunities

Being proficient in English will increase the chances of being able to

travel to different English-speaking countries and experience new
cultures.

Speaking English or being able to communicate in that language will

be better for watching news, watching movies and shows from other
channels that I still can't see and understand.

Learning English and certifying it, I will be able to graduate as a civil

engineer, which is a mandatory requirement at the university where I
study.

Example:

Being competent in English is going to increase the opportunities of landing a more

satisfying and better-paid job. We live in an international open market and English
is the most important language.
