Lesson
Summary:
Children will be able to use an IPad with photos of shapes on it to find and match the same shape as
the photos. They will then take a photo of the object that they find that matches the shape.

Estimated
Duration:
This lesson will take about 60 minutes each day for two days. Each child will have roughly 7 minutes
each to find the shape in the photo and take a picture of it. A few minutes for me to place the photos
each child takes into their own file.

Preparatio What preparation is needed?

n of Photos of shapes will need to be taken and stored into a folder.
materials
and What materials will be used?
environme IPad, camera app, file to hold the original photos in and file for each individual child to store
nt their photos in.

How will the learning environment be set up?

The IPad will have the photos on it ready for the children to find. The photos will be of
shapes inside the school or of shapes around the outside of the building.

Instructional Procedures:

I will explain what the IPad is and how to care for it while using it. I will then explain the photos of shapes and that the
photos were taken in or around the outside of the school. I will explain that each child is to go with me on a scavenger
hunt to find where the photos of the shapes were taken and then they are to take a picture of the same object as what
is in the photo. I will then ask a child to walk with me to find the objects. The child will be asked what shape they see in
the photo that I took. They will then look around the school to match the shapes/objects in each of the photos with
what they see in real life and take a picture of it. Once each child comes back to the classroom with their photos they
have taken I will then put the photos into a fill with their name on it.

Day 1:
The first 10 minutes: I will explain what the IPad is and how to care for it while using it. I will then explain the photos of
shapes and that the photos were taken in or around the outside of the school. I will explain that each child is to go with
me on a scavenger hunt to find where the photos of the shapes were taken and then they are to take a picture of the
same object as what is in the photo.
Every 10 minutes: I will ask a child to walk with me to find the objects. The child will be asked what shape they see in the
photo that I took. They will then look around the school to match the shapes/objects in each of the photos with what
they see in real life and take a picture of it. Once each child comes back to the classroom with their photos they have
taken I will then put the photos into a fill with their name on it.

Day 2:
The first 5 minutes: I will give a reminder to the children of what the activity is and how to do it.

Plum’s Photo Hunt is a site for a free app from PBSKids that encourages children and their families to go exploring
nature. This app lets children capture what they find in nature by taking photos and saving them to the app. The app
gives ideas of things to find. Children will be able to match what the app suggests to what they find in nature.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the
needs of gifted or accelerated students:
This activity could be altered for accelerated children by having children search for shape without having a photo to
refer back to.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:
When taking the photo for the children to use as a reference, I could put colored tape on the object to show the shape
better and then take the photo. I would then leave the tape on the object to make it easier to identify and match.

Vocabulary:
Triangle- A shape that has three sides
Circle- A shape that is round
Rectangle- A shape that two of its sides are longer and the other two sides are shorter.
Square- A shape that has four equal sides to it.
