PS10
Q.1.
Determine the minimum horizontal force P required to hold the
crate from sliding down the plane.
The crate has a mass of 50 kg and coefficient of static friction
betwwen the crate and the plane is 0.25.
Q.2.
The conveyor belt is moving downward at 4 m/s. If the
coefficient of static friction between the conveyor and the
15-kg package B is μs = 0.8, determine the shortest time
the belt can stop so that the package does not slide on the
belt.
Q.3.
The acceleration of a package sliding at point A is 3 m/s2.
Assuming that the coefficient of kinetic friction is the same for
each section, determine the acceleration of the package at
point B.
Q.4.
A 4-kg package is released from rest at point A and travels down the conveyor shown. Portions AB and CD are
parallel to each other. Neglecting friction, determine
a. the acceleration of the package at A,
b. the acceleration of the package during the horizontal portion of the track,
c. the speed of the package at point D.
Q.5.
A mother and her child are skiing together, and the mother is holding the end of a rope tied to the child’s
waist. They are moving at a speed of 2 m/s on a gently sloping portion of the ski slope when the mother
observes that they are approaching a steep descent. She pulls on the rope with an average force of 7 N.
Knowing the coefficient of friction between the child and the ground is 0.1 and the angle of the rope does not
change, determine
(a) the time required for the child’s speed to be cut in half,
(b) the distance traveled in this time.
