Exercise for Session 5

Outputs and Impact, Indicators and Evaluation

Form four groups A, B, C, D. Read the exercise and do a), b) and c) parts of the
exercise.

The Project: In many of the big cities of Africa and Asia, a substantial quantity of fresh
vegetables are grown with untreated wastewater. (One journal articles suggests that
some 26% of Pakistan’s vegetables are grown in this way.) There are many negative
impacts – e.g. on human health and the environment, but there are many positive health
and economic effects, since vegetables are more available, and for less money, than
was the case before the use of untreated wastewater in this way. Some researchers
have noted that properties where wastewater can readily be used for growing crops are
increasing rapidly in value.

You are considering a project with a working title “The Costs and Benefits of Using
Untreated Wastewater for Vegetable Production in XXXX (a large city in your region)”

Exercise: In small groups, brainstorm and write down your conclusions on the
following aspects of the project design and subsequent proposal:

(a) Identify at least four outputs you would expect to have in place at the end of the
project. Also identify a few milestones against which you can monitor progress towards
achievement of the outputs.

(b) Identify at least one goal for your project. It can be a macro-goal such as “
Improvement in human health in Country X”, or “ Water Quality Implications for Country
X” or a more site-specific goal, such as “Increasing the incomes of poor urban dwellers
in City X”.

Then identify at least two indicators that you can use to measure whether at to what
extent your project will contribute to the goal you have chosen.

(c) Finally, discuss and write down what sort of people you will need, for how long to
monitor this project, and then to evaluate its impact.
