What Is Ketosis and How Does it Work?
Ketosis is when your body uses fat as its main energy source.

Usually, the body’s fuel of choice is glycogen.

Glycogen is glucose(sugar) that has been repackaged and stored in your liver and
muscles, for future use.

It’s like when your computer compresses files to save space, so you can keep as
many photos of what you had for lunch and cat videos into the hardrive, as
possible.

Whatever carbohydrate you eat, whether it’s in the form of white bread or whole-
wheat bread, it all becomes glucose.

Naturally, your organs will need that sugar in order to function properly to keep you
alive and moving.

When the time comes to tap into those energy reserves, glycogen is converted into
glucose, which is then released into the blood stream and to reach your cells and
sustain them.

Going on a ketogenic diet depletes your glycogen stores, forcing your body to utilize
another energy source...

...Fat.

In low-glucose situations, your body digs into your fat cells and breaks them down
into triglycerides (fatty acids) for easy transport.

These triglycerides travel to your liver and then your liver further breaks them
down into ketones.

Again, through the blood stream highway, these newly made ketones reach your
cells, tissues, and organs and energize them.

In short, you get into ketosis and lose weight quickest by eating extremely low

candy, is off-limits.

Even foods that are not ordinarily sweet may have hidden carbs.

How Much Should I Be Eating?
Aim for a macronutrient proportion of 75% fats, 20% proteins and just 5% carbs.

That means if you are consuming 2000 calories per day, 1500 come from fat, 500
are from protein and carbs only contribute to 100 calories of your total daily intake.

That would translate to around 166.6 grams of fat, 125 grams of protein and 25
grams of carbs per day.

Use this calculator to determine your daily caloric needs. Bookmark it.

Beware of too much protein. The body will try to convert excess protien into
glucose, which could spiral you out of ketosis.

Keep your protein to 0.7-1.0 grams per pound of body weight.

As a rule of thumb, consume absolutely no more than 30 grams of carbs per day.

Follow these to get you on the right foot and soon you will see smaller numbers on
the scale.

Wait... So I Can Just Load Up on Fat and I’ll Get Skinny?
Not exactly.

At the end of the day, whether you shed body blubber or pack on more of it
depends on your calorie balance. Calories in, versus calories out.

Regardless of the diet, if you eat more calories than you expend, you gain weight.

Put simply, eat less to lose weight; but don’t starve yourself.

How Can I Burn More Calories?


Believe it or not, you already burn a lot of calories automatically.

The amount of energy that your body uses just to stay alive and functioning, your
resting metabolic rate (RMR) burns up the most calories throughout the day.

Truth be told, exercise does not play a significant role in overall calorie
expenditure; but it does somewhat help to speed up your weight loss when used in

One method to speed up glycogen depletion and indirectly burn calories is


intermittent fasting.

You would fast for 16 hours and confine your eating to an 8-hour window.

Intermittent fasting is hard and it will limit you to that small time frame.

So it isn’t always practical, especially if you have a regular job that won’t give you
enough time to scarf down all your calories within that small time frame.
