1. WOULD RATHER

Would rather V/N than V/N: thích cái gì/làm gì hơn

Cùng chủ ngữ + V_nguyên thể Khác chủ ngữ + V-ed/C2

Khẳng I’d rather stay at home than go out I’d rather you stayed at home

định tonight. tonight.

Phủ định I’d rather not go out tonight. I’d rather you didn’t go out tonight

Chú ý:

 Trong câu phủ định, dạng thức phủ định sẽ được đặt ở vế sau, không đặt ở vế
trước:

She’d rather you didn’t phone after 10 o’clock.

 Không dùng: She wouldn’t rather you phoned after 10 o’clock.

 Khi muốn dùng would rather cho một sự việc xảy ra trong quá khứ:

+ Đồng chủ ngữ: would rather + have VpII

She would rather have spent the money on a holiday. (The money wasn’t spent on a

holiday.)

I’d rather have seen it at the cinema than on DVD. (I saw the film on DVD.)

+ Khác chủ ngữ: would rather + S + had VpII

I would rather they had done something about it instead of just talking about it

I’d rather you hadn’t rung me at work. 

 Ngoài ra có thể thêm “much” trước would rather để nhấn mạnh

I’d much rather make a phone call than send an email.

She’d much rather they didn’t know about what had happened.

2. PREFER, WOULD PREFER

Prefer, would prefer: thích cái gì/làm gì hơn

Cấu trúc:

1. prefer + (not) to V/V-ing

I prefer tea to coffee.

She’s not keen on coffee. She prefers to drink tea. (or She prefers drinking

tea to coffee.)

2. would prefer (not) to V

I’d prefer to go by myself.

She’d prefer not to drive at night.

3. S + prefer + V-ing/N to V-ing/N

We prefer going by ferry to flying.

She prefers books to magazines.

4. S + would prefer to V + rather than + V-nguyên thể

I’d prefer to go skiing this year rather than go on a beach holiday.

5. S + would prefer + O + to V

They’d prefer us to come later. 

Would you prefer me to drive? 

6. S1 + would prefer it if S2 + V-ed/C2

They’d prefer it if we came later

Would you prefer it if I drove?
