MARIÑAS, JAMES PAUL C.

INTRODUCTION

The K-12 basic education program has been implemented by the national

government alongside the Department of Education for more than 2 years now under the

Department Order (40), Series of 2015. Its main objective is to ensure and give better

quality of profound education that the Filipino students will need to compete against the

global competitive market through utilization of the unique resources and adherence to

social mobilization.

As part of its mandate and requirements for the school year 2019-2020, the Grade

12 students from the Holy Rosary College of Santa Rosa, Laguna committed and

complied itself to go through a rigorous (80) eighty-hour, but fulfilling work immersion.

The work immersion is an essential requirement for completing the Senior

Highschool to test their competency and social interaction with each other on how they

will manage their jobs properly and efficiently by coordinating with each other. Each

1
learner is assigned to specific departments which includes: Production, Operations and

Accounting, Health and Safety, Employment Relations and Compensation and Benefits

With the partnership of the Holy Rosary College and the EMS Group of

Companies, the work immersion was held at a pioneer of training and preparing trainees

for the Collegiate level and the outside competitive industries, the CREOTEC Philippines

Incorporated. The students in these facilities were referred to as “immersion learners” and

to treat each other professionally.

The immersion lasted for exactly 8 days, wherein it consisted of various concept

lessons regarding proper utilization of each resources and strict policies to teach learners

how to a professional in the 1st half. Meanwhile, the latter half constituted a technical

training for the specific jobs aligned with each learner’s preferred career choices.

The work immersion is a vital aspect of basic education. Not only does this help

prepare students for the future, but it also promotes social interaction and mobilization

that creates a free and comfortable environment for each worker as it relies on the

enhancement of each other’s relationship. Consequently, this activity will be beneficial

for everyone as completion of it could be a basis of credibility to be accepted at various

firms not only inside the country, but also globally.

2
OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this work immersion to ensure success and competency of each

learner consists of the following:

1. To enhance each student’s key individual technical skills and personal

traits

2. To promote social mobilization between each immersion learners and

develop their interacting skills

3. To prepare each student on what the collegiate level and the competitive

industry looks and feels like

4. To improve the quality of education that all the Filipino students receive

3
EXPECTED OUTPUT

The immersion learners are expected to comply with the following outputs:

1. An assessment after every discussion relating to work ethics and technical

knowledge

2. An evaluation of the immersion program and the supervisors themselves

3. Hands-on activities in relation to each specific department’s aligned jobs

4. A final assessment of the overall lessons taught by the supervisors in the

final day of the work immersion

5. A video feedback about the experiences and lessons learned during the

work immersion at CREOTEC

6. A narrative report comprising the overall experiences and lessons learned

during the work immersion at CREOTEC

4
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes different literatures from specified sources that gives a

better comprehensive idea about the work immersion program at CREOTEC Philippines,

Inc.

The senior high school students strode into the K-12 basic education program

nearly two years ago as compliance to the new curriculum implemented by the

Department of Education (DepEd). The said curriculum earned various opinions and

criticisms as many thinks that it is unnecessary and the Philippines is not yet financially

ready for it yet. However, many top government officials deemed that it was a necessary

move to mobilize and improve the education system that the Philippines has. Only former

Senator Antonio Trillanes and Alan Peter Cayetano rejected the proposal.

However, the curriculum was passed by the previous administration and is now

being implemented throughout the nation. Under the Department Order (40), Series of

2015 of the DepEd, the work immersion is indicated as a requirement for the completion

before the graduation in the high school department to help students earn competency and

be ready for the next stage.

In an article published by the Victoria Christian International School (2015), the

main benefits of a work immersion is that it improves and build new skills, students

become good team players, students become good team players, and students become

goal-driven. Through this, students will gain new skill sets, communication skills and

improve their existing capabilities and they get to discover themselves and jumpstart their

5
professional growth. By being exposed to the daily operations of a real work

environment, students learn how to think like an adult and lastly, immersion trains them

how to achieve these goals by giving them an opportunity to work with and be supervised

by professionals and highly creative people.

The work immersion is a great head start for students especially to those who are

still not decided if their chosen course will be the key to their dream jobs, according to

(Agno, 2017). The said immersion is done outside the school premises in accordance to

the student’s selected strand or course. This activity will help them familiarize

themselves to their target job’s purpose or on how their course should supposed to look in

the actual field that will actually prepare the students to make decisions on postsecondary

education or employment.

According to (Petil, 2018), the goal of work immersion program is to become

familiar with the workplace, employment simulation and to apply competencies in areas

of specialization in authentic work environment. The implementation of the K-12

educational reform institutionalized the ladderasation toward a bachelor’s degree

program.

Based on the columnist Le Cruz of the Business Mirror (2018), the work

immersion was an exciting adventure that made students realize that science is not a mere

concept taught inside a classroom and make us gaze in amazement how these scientific

concepts are applied in the world which in a sense means that students are taught things

that are not exclaimed inside the school premises and only applicable in the outside

world.

6
In accordance to the Asia Foundation’s study (2018) entitled Work Immersion:

Real World Experience at Senior High, one way to address the Philippine sector’s lack of

knowledge, skills, and work experience can be addressed through the Department of

Education’s Senior High School (SHS) program, ushered by the K-12 education reform.

One of its components, the work immersion program, provides students “real workplace”

experience, giving students a set of technical-vocational and livelihood skills that can

help them make more informed career choices and improve their employment prospects.

DESCRIPTION AND SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES

This part consists and focuses on the description and schedule of activities that the

immersion learners from HRC have underwent during their work immersion at

CREOTEC.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES

The tasks and activities given to the immersion learners in CREOTEC during

their work immersion were divided into three main parts wherein, the first part included

the students’ orientation about what the work immersion would be all about and the

discussions about the basic rules within the facilities. The immersion learners were

divided based on their academic strand wherein the ABM students were oriented together

with the HUMSS students. Each division were oriented by their respective supervisors

about the rules or policies in order for them to develop professionalism. The supervisors

also discussed various aspects such as the history and the background of the EMS Group

of Companies, the 5S which the Japanese enterprises used which are essential for

maintaining their workplace, the payroll and the rates that are used for special working or

non-working holidays in accordance to the law, values and work ethics that should

comprise and employee, the CREOTEC’s basic websites such as the CORE application

and Application Processing Portal, some Japanese principles for workplace action, types

of information responsibilities, different quality management certifications used for

8
business enterprises as a credibility of quality assurance and the principles of data

collection.

The second part of the work immersion consisted of the hands-on activities tasked

by another designated supervisor. The immersion learners in the accounting department

were first tasked to complete an annual payroll for blue and white-collared workers. They

were tasked to compute the basic monthly salaries, basic benefits such as PAGIBIG

Fund, SSS and PhilHealth, and the net compensation or income earned by each worker

using the Microsoft Excel Application. Moving on, the entire accounting department

were grouped into three and were tasked to create a statistical report comprising the

financial statements completed an in accordance to the payroll indicated and the

immersion learners were tasked to fill out a BIR form for employees as a form of tax

compliance and basic taxation knowledge.

Lastly, all of the immersion learners including those under other departments

underwent a final assessment which consists of all the lessons taught by the supervisors

during the orientation period and all learners were also tasked to evaluate each of their

workplace supervisor and the work immersion program in CREOTEC.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY

This part consists of the history and other descriptive background of the company

where the immersion learners conducted their work immersion including their prescribed

mission, vision, and quality policy.

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

11
The CREOTEC Philippines Inc., is under the supervision and one of the sub-

companies of the EMS Group. The EMS Group is composed of five companies that are

mostly registered for manufacturing electronic devices and equipment and promote

technical-vocational training services. They are one of the pioneers of developing and

creating skillful workforce that helps create various opportunities in the electronic

industry.

The first company that they created was established under the name EMSCAI in

the year 2004 with the challenge to provide employment to displaced production

operators in the industry. From an employment of 89 operators to 3000, 12 years of

existence in the manufacturing industry has prompted the all-Filipino company to

diversify its services that consequently amounted to the establishment of other EMS

Group sub-companies.

Another sub-company, the Allicance Mansols, Inc. (AMI), was established in the

year 2012 in order to provide skilled labor force through intensive and pioneer training

using profound methods that made its way of being the first recipient and receive the

accreditation of the ISO 29990 certification in the country. The AMI has provided

employment to more than 40,000 people.

The next sub-company is an establishment that helps provide documentation

liaison, plant and facilities management for start-up investors throughout the nation under

the name EMS Land Services, Inc. (ELSI), in the year 2012.

12
In order to provide professional engineering solutions and training to major

corporate bidders in the country’s electronic and semiconductor industry, the EMS group

took action as to face the dilemma of providing employment at the same time creating a

venue for learning through a comprehensive training program that will equip them with

specific-industry skills, the EMS Resources Technoloy, Inc.(ERTI), was established.

The EMS continued to establish themselves further into the industry with a goal

of providing adequate and sufficient training for various sectors of the society to improve

the social changes in the nation. Consequently, CREOTEC was established to prepare

student test their competency and skills as a basic of credibility in employment.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

This part is consisted of an in-depth analysis in accordance to the activities that

the immersion learners were tasked for their respective departments during the work

immersion.

14
Completing the Annual Payroll of Employees. The first task given for the

operations and accounting department was to first complete an annual payroll financial

statement for both blue and white-collared employees. There are various tables in the

financial statements that have given data, and in order to complete the payroll, the

supervisors assisted the immersion learners by giving them the appropriate formulas for

each corresponding quantitative data needed. The salary rate was the first computed data

that uses the monthly rate which could be determined by multiplying the daily rate by

313/12 if given, wherein 313 is the estimated total number of working days in a year and

12 represents the total number of months in an annum or one accounting period, if the

daily rate is not given, it could be determined by multiplying the monthly rate to 12

divided by 313 and then the average hourly rate is computed by dividing the daily rate of

the employee by eight. Then, the total number of hours rendered were needed to be

determined in order to calculate the overtime payments, which could be solved by

subtracting the number of hours absent from the regular hours total pay. Then, both

regular overtime payment and rest day overtime pays were calculated in order to

determine the gross income of each employees. The regular overtime payment could be

determined by multiplying the total regular overtime hours rendered, hourly rate and 1.25

value while the rest day overtime payment could be determined by multiplying the total

res day overtime hours rendered, hourly rate and 1.3. Then, the immersion learners

calculated for the gross pay by multiplying the total hours rendered to the hourly rate then

adding its answer to the regular overtime pay, rest day overtime pay, and meal allowance.

Moving on, the total benefits or monthly premiums that needs to get paid were completed

15
which includes the total contribution for SSS, PhilHealth, and PAGIBIG. The employees

contributed a maximum amount of P 100 for PAGIBIG, while for PhilHealth, the

contribution is computed in accordance to their monthly salary and multiplying it to

0.0275/2. Using all of the completed table, the total net payment for each employee is

determined by subtracting the total premium or contribution on SSS, PhilHealth, and

PAGIBIG and the shuttle deduction from the gross pay. However, for the white-collared

employees, the total taxable income and taxes are needed to be determined in order to

calculate for the net pay while also using the same formulas indicated.

Preparing the Statistical Report. After the completion of the annual payroll

table, each of the operations and accounting department were tasked to create a statistical

report in accordance to the data computed from the annual payroll statement. It was

recommended to use the pie graph to show the comparisons in the presentation of the

computed data of gross pay, total premiums, total taxable income, regular overtime

payment, rest day overtime payment, income after deducting the tax and the net payment.

The last item for the white-collared employees used a bar graph to make a comparison

between the marital staus of the employees.

Filling up the BIR Form of the employees. After the completion of teach

immersion learners’ statistical report, the learners were tasked to fill up the BIR Form,

wherein each learner were assigned to one employee from the financial statements and

fill up the BIR form of the worker that was assigned to them. The given BIR form

consists of confidential information of each works including their tax identification

number, name, address, employer’s name and address, taxable compensation income,

gross taxable compensation income and the total amount of taxes withheld.

16
Preparing a Statistical Report using a PowerPoint Presentation. The final task

given to all immersion learners under the accounting and operations department was to

present a statistical report using the PowerPoint application which are made by the

leaders of each group after dividing the department by three groups. The report consisted

of a statistical report in accordance to the data for blue-collared and white-collared

employees and the annual payroll.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

As successful as the work immersion in CREOTEC might be, there are still key

several factors that negatively affected the performance and the overall experience of the

17
learners. During the course of 8 days in the work immersion at CREOTEC, several

problems were encountered by the immersion learners that became hindrances for the

completion of their tasks and comfortability inside the premises. These are some of the

problems that the immersion learners encountered and the solutions provided by the

management and the learners to solve each complication.

1. During the first four days, the ABM and HUMSS students were

oriented together in a single room making it not spacious.

Consequently, there are hardships when going in and out of the room,

comfortability in spaces and room temperature. As a solution, the learners

were then moved to a larger room with two monitors and more air-

conditioners to provide better learning place, and so the learners can move

more freely, comfortably and accordingly.

2. During the 1st day of immersion, the canteen or cafeteria were

populated resulting into the lack of tables and chairs where the

learners can sit and eat properly. Consequently, the management

decided to separate the schedules of the breaks of each department or

strand to compensate with the number of people to the number of tables

and chairs.

3. As the four days of orientation ended, the students were then assigned to

their aligned specific department and rooms. However, some computers

allocated to the immersion learners in the Accounting department did

not function properly. Some unintentionally shuts down and some does

not open immediately. Therefore, the management with the assistance of

18
the Employee and Relations department instructed some students how to

open the desktops properly while other students were assigned to other

computers that are functioning properly.

4. The last major problem that the accounting and operations

department experienced is that some barcodes allocated to the

immersion learners were not properly scanned by the scanner to

complete their automated time in and time out in the premises. In

order to not waste too much time, some immersion learners were

instructed to use the computers of the Compensation and Benefits

Department to manually time in and out by.

LESSONS LEARNED

The work immersion in CREOTEC established and helped reform various aspects

for the benefit of each immersion learners. In line with this, several lessons learned were

19
achieved by the students that will not only help them for the future but to understand

human nature and the importance of good relationship as well.

One of the key things that they learned is the building of good relationship within

the workplace. This has been an integral concept within CREOTEC or specifically, the

EMS Group as they group and diversify people into specific department and challenge

them into tasks that requires teamwork and cooperation in order to be accomplished.

Other lessons that they have learned in an objective perspective are the key

technical aspects needed for the works aligned with each department. Focusing on these

aspects decreases the probability of failure and helps finish tasks in a more efficient and

effective way.

Overcoming their fears and limits to exceed their own and the company’s

expectations is also an integral concept in working. A company values employees who

are confident on their work, however, on a negative note, this can lead to arrogance

which can wreck your co-workers perception about yourself, hence affecting the

relationship around you.

Lastly, the most important lessons that they could possibly learn as a future

employee or possibly an incorporator are being disciplined, composed and calm at all

times. Proper time management, objective thinking, obeying the policies within the

workplace and working under pressure helped achieved such integral concepts.

Cramming and being anxious only leads to lack of success.

20
RECOMMENDATION

21
The following are the recommendations for the development and possible

improvement keys vital that could be a perspective for the company to be a better

workplace in the future:

1. CREOTEC has established good and well-invested facilities, however, some areas

are not fully air-conditioned, specifically outside the rooms resulting into a high

temperature when falling in line for the room assignments or other relational

works. It is advisable to work the areas where a number of people are assigned to

be fully air-conditioned as the body temperature drastically changes and could

make their employees or learners uncomfortable.

2. The next thing they need to improve are their barcode scanning program as it is

vital for the operations, they should compensate with the functionality of their

devices on the same level as the importance of the program, as observed within

the course of 4 days, some barcodes weren’t scanned automatically without

further changes until the end of the immersion.

3. Another advice specified is to look upon each immersion learner’s perspective, as

during the immersion, the cafeteria area or the canteen is densely populated which

is somewhat not in ratio with the number of people within the area of CREOTEC

resulting into lack of tables, chairs and long lines. As an advice, they should

accept only one group of immersion learners at a time and not multiple groups.

4. Lastly, is a subjective but meaningful advice wherein their policy of prohibiting

some electronic devices is not entirely fruitful as they claim themselves to be a

technological organization but prohibits the use of such devices and thinking

22
deeply, using cellphones during breaks helps maintain composure, remove stress

due to long working hours and get informed of emergencies. Hence, if they are

trying to create skillful workers and safe facility, they should really adapt to the

system of real-time working place.
