READING SECTION

Question for 16-19

The National Monument, or “Monas”, as it is popularly called, is one of the


monuments built during the Soekarno era of fierce nationalism. Monas is famous
among Indonesian people as the highest historic building in Jakarta. It was established
to commemorate Indonesia’s struggle for independence from the Dutch colonialism.
Since it was opened to the public, this National Monument has become one of the
popular tourist destinations in Indonesia.

Monas is a tower with a height of 123 meters. The building has as its special
characteristic the flame shape, covered with gold foil that you can see on the top of
the tower. If visitors go down to the base of the tower, they will see museum
measuring 80 x 80 meters. Ruang kemerdekaan is in the cup part of Monas. Actually,
it is an amphitheater within this building. Visitors can also use the elevator to access
the top platform ant the Flame of Independence.

Monas is open to public every day. You can visit to remember the struggle of
Indonesian heroes against colonialism and learn about Indonesian history. You will
see many kinds of historical buildings and other unique inheritance. By visiting
historical buildings, we will keep this nation secure as one of the great nations of the
world.

Mohammad Hatta

Dr. Mohammad Hatta was the first vice President of Indonesia. He was born
in Bukit tinggi, West Sumatra. Many people called him Bung Hatta. His birthday was
on August 12ᵗh, 1902. He studied in private formal education and then he moved to
state school. Since he was a young man, he was interested in politics and joins the
league of young Sumatrans.

He studied economics in the Netherlands. While he was there, he was active in


the national movement. He was finally arrested because he was too active.

He joined a political organization when he returned to Indonesia. The


organization was called “Pendidikan Nasional Indonesia”. He reminded Indonesian
people about awareness, especially in politics. Because of his political involvement,
he was arrested again. The colonial government considered that his activity was
dangerous.

Soekarno and Hatta finally proclaimed Indonesia’s Independence when the


Japanese surrendered their control in August 1945. Hatta became the first Vice-
President of the Republic of Indonesia.
