I, Milton Friedman was born on July 31, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the fourth
and last child and first son of Sarah Ethel (Landau) and Jeno Saul Friedman. My
parents were born in Carpatho-Ruthenia of the Soviet Union. They emigrated to
the U.S. in their teens, meeting in New York. When I was a year old, my parents
moved to Rahway, N.J., a small town about 20 miles from New York City.
I was awarded a competitive scholarship to Rutgers University. I
graduated from Rutgers in 1932. I financed the rest of my college expenses by the
usual mixture of waiting at tables, clerking in a retail store, occasional
entrepreneurial ventures, and summer earnings. Shortly, however, I became
interested in economics.
In economics, I had the good fortune to be exposed to two remarkable
men: Arthur F. Burns and Homer Jones. Arthur Burns shaped my understanding
of economic research, introduced me to the highest scientific standards, and
became a guiding influence on my subsequent career. Homer Jones introduced
me to rigorous economic theory, made economics exciting and relevant, and
encouraged me to go on to graduate work. On his recommendation, the Chicago
Economics Department offered me a tuition scholarship. As it happened, I was
also offered a scholarship by Brown University in Applied Mathematics, but, by
that time, I had definitely transferred my primary allegiance to economics. In
1976 I won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for my achievements in the
fields of consumption analysis, monetary history and theory and for his
demonstration of the complexity of stabilization policy. In 1977, at age 65,1
retired from the University of Chicago after teaching there for 30 years.

The Ampera Bridge is a vertical lift bridge in Palembang that connects

Seberang Ulu and Seberang Ilir which lie separated by Musi River. It was
inaugurated on September 30, 1965 by the Minister / Commander of the Army at
the time Lieutenant General Ahmad Yani. The date also holds significance as the
Lieutenant General was killed by the troops of the 30th September Movement, a
couple of hours after the bridge was opened to public.
The bridge was built in efforts to make something as grand as the Tower
Bridge in London. The bridge was initially named after the president, known as Bung
Karno Bridge, but after his tenure ended, the bridge was renamed to Ampera Bridge.
Ships can no longer pass from under the bridge as it was officially stated in
1970 that the bridge would not open anymore, a major reason for this being an
inconvenient disruption of the traffic flowing from the two regions it connects
because the mere operation of the bridge’s large wings would take about half an
hour.
During the time the bridge could be opened, it would rise up at a speed of 10
meters per minute for ships of a maximum height of 44.5 meters to pass underneath
the bridge. The bridge also had ballast weights in place to balance it, but they were
removed in 1990 to prevent foreseeable accidents.
Initially, the color of the bridge was grey which was then changed to yellow in
1992. Further, it was changed to red in 2002 when Megawati was the President of
Indonesia.
The Ampera Bridge was funded by the Japanese war reparations with the Fuji
Car Manufacturing Co.Ltd.as the in – charge company for designing and constructing
of the bridge under the First President of Indonesia. The structure is also historically
significant as at the time. Fuji Car Manufacturing Co.Ltd. had no bridge-building
experience and it was the first bridge of its kind to be built in Indonesia.
