Grammar

Let’s focus on two parts of speech. Nouns and Verbs

Nouns
a) Nouns – words that are a ‘person, place, thing or an idea’ – for example: book, lady,
house, forest
If you can put the words ‘a’ or ‘an’ in front of the word and it makes sense, it is usually a
noun
For example: a book (noun)
a penguin (noun)
a lake (noun)
a yellow (not a noun)
a Mike (not a noun)
an ant (noun)

b) Verbs- these are ‘action’ words: laugh, cry, dance, run, sing,
Words that tell you what nouns do
Example: She is standing in the hallway.

c) Helping verbs (or linking verbs)- a helping verb comes before a main verb

Example: I am (helping verb) resting (main verb).
