Introduction

o Hydrogen is the simplest form of all

molecules, it has the lowest energy content
by volume, but it has highest energy content
of any fuel by weight.

o It is available in the atmosphere as a gas and

in water as a liquid.

o Due to high energy content of hydrogen it is

employed as a fuel in application such as
FC’s and rockets.

State of Art
Hydrogen fuel cells will play significant role in transportation industry in
near future.
Electric vehicle becomes a more attractive alternative for transportation.
An additional energy source is required due to the limited travel range for
pure electric vehicle which can be reached by battery only. Energy
management strategy in electric vehicle, especially in a vehicle with more
than one power source, is very crucial in saving energy. Battery state of
charge (SOC) operation range influences the vehicle efficiency.
OBJECTIVES

To conduct trial on Model-Based Simulation for Hybrid Fuel

Cell/Battery/ Ultracapacitor Electric Vehicle
METHODOLOGY

VEHICLE
Hydrogen Fuel Cell
HYDROGEN: A fuel cell is an electrochemical device which FUEL CELL: The powertrain in this study consists of a polymer
converts chemical energy in hydrogen into electricity and electrolyte membrane fuel cell system (PEMFC), lithium battery pack,
water through the electrochemical reaction as presented in ultracapacitor modules, and an electric motor. Fuel cell played the
role as main traction power. Fuel cell performance was tested using
below equation.
Wonatek load box which able to withdraw power up to 12 kW. This
test was required to be done before the vehicle simulation because
H2 + O2 H2O the fuel cell polarization curve was needed to be known.
BATTERY:
Mathematical modeling in this study is developed using the electrical equivalent circuit to calculate the battery voltage
(Vbat), as shown in (6).
Vbat = Vbat,oc – Ibat.Rint,bat

Battery current during charging and discharging is influenced by the battery open circuit voltage and battery power
(Pbat).

ULTRACAPACITOR:
The energy that can be delivered by ultracapacitor (Ecapacitor) is influenced by its capacitance (Ctotal), initial and
final voltage, Vuc,final and Vuc,init, respectively.

ELECTRIC MOTOR
A lookup table from the electric motor manufacturer data is used to determine the power required for the traction.

SIMULATION
The simulation was done under LabVIEW platform, with the vehicle speed data that was recorded in Solo City. The
vehicle had travel range about 33 km. The speed profile is presented . In the simulation, the fuel cell system provided
the traction power up to 7 kW. When the power demand is higher than 7 kW, the additional power was supplied by
battery and ultracapacitor. In this simulation, the power that can be recuperated during braking was not taken into
account.
SIMULATIONS

. It can be said that battery and ultracapacitor assisted about 5.17% of the total required
energy. This condition happened as the vehicle run mostly at low speed (around 35 km/h).
Thus the fuel cell mostly operated all the time as the most power required was below
maximum fuel cell system power. The lower power produced by fuel cell stack, the more
power loss was experienced by the stack. The energy consumed by the fuel cell BOP was
343.292 Wh. Fuel cell stack consumed 281.86 grams of hydrogen. Average fuel cell and
motor efficiency were 54% and 43%, respectively. To understand the interaction between
the fuel cell, battery, and ultracapacitor, the simulation needs to be improved to study the
dynamic behavior of each component

CONCLUSION
• It can be concluded that the hybrid fuel cell/battery/
ultracapacitor electric vehicle can fulfill the power
demand during travelling. Most required power was
supplied by fuel cell system (totally 94.83% of the
total power requirements). Battery and ultracapacitor
supported only 5.17% of the traction power during
acceleration. Hydrogen would be last only for about
4.25 times of traveling range.
SCOPE
• Hydrogen Fuel cell will play a significant role in the
transportation industry in the near future.

• The price of the fuel cell will reduce when producing fuel
cells in large quantities and commercializing them.

• We could expect fuel cell-based transportation, power plants,

and electricity generators to become prominent in the
coming decades.
