1 Educational Models
2.1.2 Compare educational models and explain how they impact the classroom

Pedagogies are methods or how we choose to teach according to what we know about

how students learn (evidence 1.1.1). When teachers get to know their students, they are able to

make decisions about how their classroom is run. They are able to decide if their students are

independent enough to learn the information on their own or if they need more hands on learning

with extra attention from the teacher. The pedagogy you choose for your classroom is based on

the needs of your students.

Constructivism is a form of child centered learning.According to our graphic organizer

(evidence 1.1.2) this is where students construct their own understanding and knowledge through

experiences and reflection. Teacher Academy is a good example of constructivism. In this class

we are able to create our own understanding of teaching through our own experiences in the

classroom. I believe this form best applies to high school classrooms because older students are

able to experience more due to the extended opportunities that are offered in high school.

Student led learning leaves the learning and responsibility to students. This could be

beneficial to the education of students because they can learn at their own pace. Students could

also learn independence and gain confidence in their learning. It also increases critical thinking

skills as students have to teach themselves skills. A negative could be students could struggle

learning because the material is not coming straight from the teacher. According to our student

led graphic organizer (evidence 1.1.3) forms of student led learning include peer teaching,

centers, socratic seminars, students solve problems, student models, and more. This form would
work the best in grades 5-12. Students from 5th to 12th are able to work on their own. While

younger grades need a lot more supervision and instruction.

Teacher led learning is direct instruction through the teacher. According to our teacher

led learning graphic organizer (evidence 1.1.4) some benefits of teacher led instruction is the

students are getting the best information from their teacher and it makes it easier to ask questions

during instruction. Teachers also have more control and there are less distractions during

learning. On the other hand, teacher led instruction can make it difficult to engage all students

and include all learning styles. It also makes it hard for students to be independent and use

critical thinking skills. Forms of teacher led learning include direct instruction, lectures,

modeling, and demonstrations. This form works in all grades P-12. Students who are younger

need lots of attention and direct instruction. While students who are older can work with less

instruction, all grades benefit from being taught directly from the teacher.

Teacher and student producing is a form of social constructivism. This is a form of

teaching that is a collaboration of students and teachers working together in learning. Students

are able to be involved in their own learning and create a deeper understanding of topics.

Teachers are able to identify learning styles and get to know the students at the same time. This

collaboration builds relationships between students and teachers. Examples of teacher and

students producing forms include teacher facilitates, teacher starts discussion, teacher teaches

metacognition, formative assessments, and students self-assess.

While all of these are forms of teaching, they all have big differences and underlying

similarities. Constructivism and student led are both child centered but constructivism is based

off of experiences while student led is still based off of curriculum. Teacher and student
producing is a form of constructivism but with both the student and teacher involved. Student led

and student and teacher producing both give the students a form of independence in their

learning.

Finding what educational model works for your classroom is a process but once you find

it, your students will be able to thrive. Every student works differently but if you are to

differentiate within your classroom you will prepare them to the best of your ability to be

successful.
