WOMAN WHO MADE HISTORY

IN COSTA RICA :
● Emilia Solórzano Alfaro
Emilia Solórzano Alfaro :
She was born in December 8th, 1835.

She married: Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez.

They have 5 children.

In 1878: She travelled to Europe inspired to


work for education.

She was the founder of the first high school


for girls in 1888.

She influences to her husband to finish the


death penalty in 1871.
Colegio Superior de Señoritas :

First institution created for the secondary education exclusive of young


Costa Rican women.

1900-1950: Directors, teachers and students of the School had great


influence in the feminine culture of Costa Rica.

1923: They founded the “Costa Rican Feminist League” looking for the
female vote.

1950: Women vote for the first time.


Abolition of the death penalty :

The death penalty was a type of punishment.

The president Tomás Guardia changed the Political Constitution

inserting in the Article 21: "Human life is inviolable"

That was one of the big steps in the country to defend human rights.
