A. Semiotics Film

Based on that explanation semiotics film is the study of sign as they pertain to
film (the semiotics of film). Semiotics film appeared since 1920’s until now. There so
many pioneers of semantics one of them is Roland Barthes. The history of semantics
film divided into three era that early semioticians (-1990’s), Russian formalism
(1910-1930’s), and Structulism and post-structuralism (1950-present).

Usually on semiotics film researcher will choose the concept of Roland


Barthes that denotation and connotation.
1. Denotation
Denotation is what the audience sees and hears, it also what they do not have
a big effort to strive to recognize it. Denotation is the real meaning of what the
inside screen looks like. The audiences do not need to think deeply in order
understanding the signs and symbols on that film.
2. Connotation
Connotation typically involves emotional overtones, objective interpretation,
social values, and ideological assumptions. Christian Metz said, “The study of
connotation brings us closer to the notion of the cinema as an art.”

B. Exposure the Example and Case

As the exposure of the semantics film the writers took a journal as the
reference of showing the example and case. This journal took film “Alangkah
Lucunya Negeri Ini” this film was published on April 15th, 2010. On this film there
many scenes that can be taken as the example and case of semiotics of film, as below:

1. Denotation meaning
In the first picture, Muluk walks across the suburban bridge Jakarta, then
pass the traditional market under the bridge. Next picture shown by batu kebal
bacok seller, undur-undur seller, seller who offered life predition, and each
picture before, seen how enthusiastic the buyer was with the offers.
2. Connotation meaning
The connotation that this picture wants to convey is the contradiction
between two understanding or beliefs in Indonesian society. In this 21 st
century despite logic and modern thought has appeared in the academic field,
there are so many people in Indonesia still adhere to the beliefs of animism
and dynamism worship of the spirit (something that does not appear to the
eye). They believe in spirit deceased ancestors settled in certain place, such us
big tree. The spirits of the ancestors were often asked for their business. In
this scene Muluk connotes those who adhere to modern thinking(logic /
reason), whereas sellers and buyers in the market describe the partystill
believe in animism (dynamism).
3. Myth
The world knows Indonesia is a country that is diverse in religion and
veryhold trust in God Almighty.Christian Belief, in Leviticus 19:31, "Donot
turn awayto spirits or to the spirits of fortune tellers; do not seek them and
withthus they become unclean because of them; I am the Lord yourGod. " In
Islam,"Do not bow down to the sun and not to the moon, butbow to Allah who
created the sun and the moon, if you really arewant to worship Him "(QS.
Fush-shilat: 37)".That is, every Religion is very opposed to Animism and
Dynamism in Indonesia.Even in school education, it is very required to attend
religious education.Indonesia, on the other hand, was dubbed an Education
and ReligiousCountry, but on the other handthe state is still permissive to the
people who adhere to Animism and Dynamism.

1. Denotation meaning
Muluk tried to apply for a company where the company already
wasapproaching 'fold out'. The company leader here looks desperate with
Bachelor of Management (Economics) and Management Science which
apparently cannot save his company.
2. Connotation meaning
This scene illustrates the difficulty of employment in Indonesia,
scienceManagement connotes the most educational science demanded by
intellectuals this time. This problem comes from universities that are only
more focused on how to prepare students who quickly graduate with a
cumlaude GPA without provide competence and skills to get to know and
enter the workforce. Generally these undergraduate unemployed have low
skills and are not yet wasted mentally to enter the workforce. other than
because of human resources (students) lack of quality, lack of labor-intensive
jobs that are capable absorb labor, thus encouraging high unemployment in
Indonesia.
3. Myth
Indonesia according to the Organization for Economic and
Development Cooperation (OECD),Indonesia will become the country with
the fifth largest number of young graduates in the futurefront. This situation
will materialize no later than 2020. As of 2020, OECDestimates that number
will increase to 6 percent. So, Indonesiawhile defeating Britain, Germany and
Spain, as contributing countriesyoungest Even in those days there was a high
probability of being educatedthis country is three times more than France.
